The R1 takes 2nd Gen mobile CPU's for example the i7-2670QM, 2760QM, 2860QM, etc.
If you wanted to go for an i5 then the i5-2540M would be the one but for the price of these processors these days you may as well go for an i7 Quad core

Hi again, I was wondering if the Intel Core i5 3475S 2.9 GHz Quad-Core Processor can work in the m14x r1.

The R2 was backwards compatible and could take both 2nd and 3rd gen CPU's but the R1 cannot go forwards to the 3rd gens.
If it's running slow then I'd also look at pairing a decent 2nd gen CPU with a new 2.5" SSD (if you are still using a mechanical HDD)
