Area-51m R1, RTX 2080 temperatures too high

Hello,

I have a problem with temperatures on RTX 2080. They go beyond the 75 and then the protection will work until

I have a few questions:
1) What is the maximum GPU temperature limit on other laptops with RTX 2080 Area-51m graphics card? The hardware reading from GPU-Z is 87 degrees Celsius. The current temperature limit is 75 degrees Celsius.
2) How to change the temperature limit in AWCC? Currently cannot be changed.
2) What is the maximum speed of the GPU and CPU fans?
3) Which thermal grease should be used? Gryzzly Kryonaut 12.5W / mK will be good?

Hi @Kaj200  thank you for sharing update.

This is an English forum. Your location is unknown and Dell's International Warranty depends on the type of extended support purchased and what your location provides.

In the first 30 days, you can request a new replacement or full refund. Dell policy = Refunds, System exchanges

Thereafter, the Dell Warranty conditions apply and your Dell account is used to request Dell Product Support to create a Service Request for you, so that Dell knows there is a problem to fix.

If you remain unhappy, you can request escalation of your Service Request to that elevated tier that has the authority to authorise your stated remedy. Your Service Request must have details of your remedy and it must be clear that you request fast track escalation to the appropriate tier.

Please click on @DELL-Cares and send Private Message requesting assistance. Thank you.

Please click on Kudos to say thank you for response from user that is not employed by Dell. Please share an update on progress, so that other users derive benefit from your experience. Thank you.

85C is the Maximum for Other laptops including yours.

Use MSI Afterburner they have access to the GPU Better.

Maximum for my CPU is 5400RPM and the GPU is 5200RPM.

I would use anything that's not expensive but not too cheap.

This is the paste I use Amazon.com: Easycargo 11W/m-K Thermal Paste Kit, High Performance Carbon Thermal Compound for Cooler Heatsink Interface CPU GPU: Electronics

I haven't gotten a bad thermal reading and it keeps staying cool.

Thanks for the answer

I checked in GPU-Z. The maximum "Temperature limit" for the RTX2080 (OC) version is 87 degrees Celsius. I don't know why the drivers set it to 75. I wanted to replace the stock paste with liquid metal, but received a message that I would lose my warranty.

I will ask you about these speeds. The service replied that the speed of the fans was 3700, my max, it was also 3700. Tell me, where did you get the information about 5200 / 5400RPM? I ask out of curiosity

Hardware: Laptop AW Area-51m, i9-9900K 5GHz RTX 2080 OC

I don't know how you got 3400RPM.

I got 5400RPM and that was on the FULL SPEED preset. I even used the SPEEDFAN application to measure the speeds and I got the same thing.

I already repasted my AREA 51M, The warranty still is on there since I had the wrong configuration with 16GB of RAM instead of 64Gb so they fixed it. I also don't recommend liquid metal on a laptop as it can spill over on other components.

I would stick to the paste I sent above as that has very good thermal performance without risking your laptop.

Right. It is reasonable in this case, only paste from 3M or Grizzly etc.
I think you are right about the thermal paste

Hi everyone

I already got information here that dell's service technicians in my country  🤬🤬. I skip those service technicians who are awesome Sorry, but ☠☠☠ spoils Alienware's reputation when it comes with a premium or pro warranty . A waste of money and time. If the laptop does not disappoint me, the next time I will buy the equipment without a guarantee so as not to waste time... Fortunately, there are people with experience, knowledge and helpful advice Good work!

And the solid cooling system in the AW Area 51m with RTX2080 allows it to be built on during update hardware

I close the topic. After the service technician, remember, always replace thermopads or thermal grease.

Standard solution:
1) New thermal grizzly or thermal paste with technical values> 12.5W / m * K - you can use Thermal Grizzly.

Solution for more advanced users to achieve the best results:
1) New thermally conductive paste or thermopad with technical values> 12.5W / m * K or approx. 70W / m * K for RTX2080 or spare parts.
2) Clean reinstallation of OS and firmware.
3) Cleaning the cooling system.
4) Possible modification of the AW dedicated software.
5) Possible modification of the cooling system. It's about fans.
6) Burning the thermal paste. For several hours on load. But everyone knows that. And I would forget. For a better sense of humor - to the service technician. Not professionals, they can rest assured . And telling the people in charge of marketing to add a THERMAL KIT with an SOP (instructions) to each Alienware on how to do it for simple users. Grrrrrrrr...

P.S. I did not have such a and   with a service technician. And thank you from the Dell Community for reminding us that the simplest solutions are the best . After repair, FPS are higher than right after purchase. I wonder how longggggg...

Hi guys,

I know you are the best and super experts. Advise me.

I have a problem with the Area-51m R1 from the beginning. When I turn on more demanding software or a game. In short, the Area-51m R1 hardware has a performance problem. It overheats every now and then.
To be able to use the equipment, I have to intentionally decrease the 'MAX FRAME SETTINGS' parameter to 45FPS in NVidia Panel. The fans are set to 100% (approx. 3700RPM). Thermal paste isn't a problem here, or the drivers aren't. Unless fans? Supposedly, they should have over 5000RPM? I do not know. The service technicians have already replaced the graphics card, but no changes. Re-installation of the system was also, etc. So something with the hardware must be wrong. Maybe a faulty, unlucky laptop? I guess it can not be repaired. I still have it under warranty. Tell me. What do I have to do for the Dell service to replace my laptop with another functional one?

i9900k / RTX 2080

Thanks and have a nice day

Have you made sure the thermal pads and heat sink have proper contact?

I said my fans spin at 5400RPM because I took my Alienware 15 R1 fans and connected them to the motherboard.

Thermal pad on GPU chip? As far as I know, there's paste there.
So it rather sticks.

The laptop is under warranty. Alienware Area-51 ALX 2006 I think that if the laptop is under warranty, I will convert it so that it does not heat up
But it's good to know that Alienware 15 R1 has 5400RPM fans

With this cooling, it is a factory defect. It was bad from the beginning Desktop CPU and GPU 2080 in a laptop? It must be a fake . Clocks like in the desktop version, and cooling from... The equipment only looks, it does not work. Detriment. Good and honest Alienware hardware is not bought to be misled
Chinese companies can provide a desktop in a laptop... It's a pity for words.

I mean if they really wanted to make this the most upgradable laptop ever, why did they have to use very expensive and proprietary gpu cards instead of MXM?

Hi @Kaj200!

I made a mistake in my reply. I mean't to say that the thermal pads around the GPU chip are new and thermal paste is replaced on the actual GPU and CPU, Not thermal pads on the CPU and GPU.
