Area-51m, side exhaust

Ok so I ordered a area 51M with a I7 9700k and a rtx 2060. I just read something that the base model with the i7 8700 and the 2060 does not have side exhaust. So I guess I will only have one side that will have a side exhaust. Also what happens if I ever decide to upgrade the gpu. Probably have to change the heat pipes too. Why would they block these vents. I'm guessing I made a mistake to buy this system if I have to buy a power bar, gpu and heat pipes to upgrade. Hope someone can answer this question so I can cancel my order.

Hello all,

We've been digging to find the most accurate info we could get for you about this. The 2060, indeed, as Umar mentioned on his tweet has a different design. However, the PC's upgradeability is not affected by this. You can always get the 2060 version and upgrade it down the road to the 2070/2080. Do keep in mind that you will need a new thermal module too if you decide to do so in the future.

Here are some pictures to explain how the 2060's thermal module is different on the side from the 2070/2080.

Ok so how is this laptop considered upgradable when you have to change everything in it to upgrade it. I guess I will cancel my order and look elsewhere for a good laptop.

Hi @gatesdenis,

  • Mid: 8 pipes no side exhaust
  • Entry: 7 pipes no side exhaust

So, unfortunately not. It has no side exhaust.

@alien-Eimy, re: your post:

Hi @gatesdenis,

  • Top: 8pipes + side exhaust
  • Mid: 8 pipes no side exhaust

I follow the 51m owner's community, I can state as a matter of fact that there is no '8-pipe' heatsink, that turned out to be fake news & reference to it was scrubbed from the USA SalesPage after community backlash; reference to it still exists world-wide however on other country's sites (UK/Can/Aus/Fra/Ger/Italy/Spain/Japan etc) since apparently Aliens do not feel a sense of shame for false-advertising in non-US countries ...

And now Eimy you've been caught up in it too: selling a false product, false-advertising your false product, publicly steering customers towards higher-end configs in pursuit of 8pipes they will never receive; Dellware Sales, & Reps falsely 'marketing, advertising & selling' the public 8pipes & selling the public on 8pipes is & was the backlash & even here in this thread now, members of the public must come in & clean up this false advertising & fake news which persists on a world-wide scale for reasons I suspect are on purpose given this was settled 2weeks ago yet here we still are  ... ... ...

There is one heatsink, it has 7pipes, it comes in two varieties: with or without sidevents > only the base 2060 comes without side vent exhaust, all other models get side exhaust (all 2070 2080 configs regardless of CPU chosen). Models with 2060 will get a rear exhaust only > 2070 / 80 get rear & side

To upgrade in the future, u will most likely need the 'correct' heatsink shipped now with 2070 2080: it is common to have to purchase & swap the heatsinks out when upgrading to better CPU/GPU, that isn't new. Perhaps best to dig a little deeper now & get a 2070, or, prep for the heatsink swap in good time if u go with 2060

Ok so if I get the 2060 with the i7 9700 I will still have no side vents. I thought is was only if I get the 2060 with the 8th gen i7 8700. Can someone confirm this.

@Cass-Ole,

Will get your feedback to our marketing team and engineers to remove this info from the site and any other place where it is. We got the info from our official sources and this is what we got too, just like you all did.

If this is incorrect, it does need to be corrected .Thanks again for pointing it out.

Thanks. I am going to cancel my order.

I just ordered Area-51m with i7-8700 RTX 2060 GPU. So can you confirm it do not have side vent? Does the RTX 2070 has side vent? If yes, I will cancel my order with RTX 2060 and order with RTX 2070.

This is the answer

2060 needs the least cooling, so you'll get by right now without side-vents-exhaust; later, if u upgrade the GPU you'll want/need whatever thermal-cooling performance advantage the side vents are designed for which implies u need to buy the different heatsink & most likely the better-higher-wattage power-brick-adaptor also, the cost of which is bundled into the higher 2070 2080 GPU price now at checkout, while the cost of the discrete DGFF GPU upgrade itself will most likely be quite high through Dell Sales (higher than had u bought at checkout). This may be a case where digging deeper now for the 2070 or 2080 to get the better GPU + heatsink + power brick in your hands now may be a wiser decision than the cost of those same parts later

Cool marketing by Alienware, but its misleading and completely not acceptable. I am cancelling my order right away now. I will go with Asus or lenova. I dont like this type of caches here, Alienware is showing images in official website but as u said it will come without vents. I am sure 100s or 1000s will cancel and return 2060. Thank you.

Ok so fine HS is designed differently with the base model. Does it also means the chasis looks different? In what ways the chasis is different then 2070/2080 or it looks same from outside only different inside? Pls.confirm so that i can cancel my order.

I ended up canceling this order. Why add cheaper cooling on the 2060 makes no sense. The CPU will run hotter if you have the 9th gen CPU.

Thank u very much for ur reply n infos. I got confirmation from the manufactur team that yes the thermal is designed differently but all the model has vent on the side. It is just that 2060 inside exhaust is designed differently. 2060 has the same vents on both side like 2070 n 2080 but no exhaust. So i am keeping my order will try out 2060. Still dont get the point why alieware does that to save few bucks. I paid more than 2200++ for 2060. Once again thanks n appreciated.

Is the updated base version with the 9700 and 2060 still using this thermal module or has it been upgraded to the same thermal module used with the 9700K /9900K since the 9700 is an 8 core CPU?
