M18x R1, possible GPU upgrades?
Hello
I have a 2011 M18x R1 with:dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6990 in AMD CrossFireX that have just failed. Otherwise this machine is in great shape. My question is, can this machine be upgraded, and if so to what extent. Thanks in advance.

I have recently upgraded my M18x R2 with a GTX 1070. I believe yours would only be the R1 since it has the 6990M's so unfortunately you can't do this upgrade. I would suggest you install one or two 780M's. If you go for dual cards then you'll have to get an SLI cable which puts the price up. If you want to stay with AMD then the 7970M's are decent cards. I'm not sure if the 8970M or R9 M290X are compatible

Hello ! How did you please upgrade your graphics card, where did you buy it? I also have an M18X R2 and I can't find out how to buy the portable version of the video card.

Hi. I got mine from a guy on the Alienware forum at NotebookReview. They usually cost around $370-400USD. They are available on ebay from China but they are usually more expensive. Just search for MXM GTX 1070
You will need the unlocked BIOS and a modded driver. I think you can get the BIOS from the guys at NotebookReview. The modded driver is pretty easy and there are guides on how to do it or I can walk you through it.
