Avamar Data Usable Capacity
We have specified a 6 node avamar grid and my question is if we get all of that capacity from all of the boxes for backup or if the “Utility Node” needs to be backed out of the usable capacity for backups. I was under the impression that the data, both backup and metadata, were spread across all of the nodes. Just need to confirm if the usable capacity of the 6 node grid is 23TB or actually 19TB…

The Utility node does not contribute to the storage capacity of a RAIN Avamar grid.

Gen 4S utility node will not count towards total grid capacity. As for total physical capacity of a grid it depends on model used and if one node is a spare. I suggest talking to an EMC SE or partner to confirm the grid is sized correctly.

Hi,
In scalable multi-node Avamar servers, a single utility node provides essential internal services for the server (for example, administrator server, replication, external authentication, network time protocol [NTP], and Web access). Because utility nodes are dedicated to running these essential services, they cannot be used to store backups.
