Avamar and VMware image backup question
Hello,
We are in the process of acquiring a Avamar grid (not the VM appliance version but the full Avamar hardware) and I'm still confuse about how Avamar will do VMware image level backups.
Does Avamar rely on another proxy server to backup the vmdk's first to a staging area and then backup that stage copy like VCB?
If it's like VCB then what will happen as VMware has announce VCB support is going away. Also I don't like the idea of doing 2 backups to get 1.
If not like VCB then how is it done?
Does anyone have any documentation on this subject as I can't seem to find any.
Thanks in advance.

The new way that avamar does vms backups is really similar like Vmware Data Recovery, it uses a staging server.
basically Avamar bring with the proxy image, just have to configure it and you will be able to connect your vcenter and backup all vms that are in there.
For the restore you can choose to restore all the vm or file level restore (windows) for the last option you need to configure a windows proxy vm.
you can see the avamar administration manual that is in powerling it has an option for vmware support, there you can see all the functionality

Along with all the downloadable avamar clients there is a vmnware .ova file which is a virtual appliance.
This becomes the proxy for your vm backups.
If you have windows and linux - you'll need to install one for each.
Note that you need a vcenter server for this to work.
It works really well as far as I've played with it.

Hi,
Backup VCB is replaced for VADP in vSphere 4.
VMWare vSphere 4 Update 2 (build 258672)
Avamar Server 5.0.2.41 our later
Avamar VM Proxy 5.0.105-169 (Included with SP2 on the Grid)
Avamar Proxy is a Virtual Machine.

AVAMAR VMWARE IMAGE BACKUP AND RESTORE is a different method from VCB.
It uses Avamar VM Image Proxy deployed in the ESX environment.
For details, you could refer to the documentation 'Avamar for VMware Guide 5.0'.
