VMware image backup failed with error message “snapshot creation failed” due to VMFS maximum size
VMware image backup failed with error message “snapshot creation failed” due to VMFS maximum size
Symptom
When using Avamar 6.1 Gen4 to make VMware image backup for ESXi5.0 virtual machines, the backup failed with the following error messages:
avvcbimage Error <16279>: vSphere Task failed (snapshot error=35): 'File is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore1
avvcbimage Error <14635>: snapshot 'Avamar-1372867578df518956107e02fd613106b8de4c2b702c006f99' create task encountered problem
avvcbimage FATAL <14688>: The VMX '[vnx5500_LUN1] 02djg_win08_51/03djg_win08.vmx' could not be snapshot
avvcbimage Error <9759>: createSnapshot: snapshot creation failed
Cause
Exceeded the maximum file size limit (2TB - 512Bytes) of VMFS
On the ESXi 5 and above versions, the default block size of VMFS is 1MB. At this time, the maximum file size of VMFS can support 2TB - 512Bytes (There is a minus in here). If you exceed this limit, the snapshot creation will fail.
The following tables are the relationship between Block Size and supported Maximum File Size when use different version of ESX / ESXi and VMFS.
ESXi 5.0/5.1 with VMFS5
On ESXi 5.0 and 5.1 with newly formatted VMFS5, a standard 1MB block size is available. The maximum file size is 2TB - 512Bytes.
Block Size |
Maximum File Size |
1MB |
2TB - 512Bytes |
ESX/ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.x with VMFS3
On ESX/ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.x using a VMFS3 datastore, the maximum file size corresponds to the block size of the VMFS datastore.
Block Size |
Maximum File Size |
1MB |
256GB |
2MB |
512GB |
4MB |
1TB |
8MB |
2TB - 512Bytes |
ESX/ESXi 4.0 with VMFS3
On ESX/ESXi 4.0, the maximum file size corresponds to the block size of the VMFS3 datastore.

1MB |
256GB - 512Bytes |
2MB |

Resolution
It is a VMware VMFS maximum size limit issue. You just need to increase the block size of VMFS to resolve the issue.
For example, increase the block size of VMFS to 4MB or 8MB. Then perform VMware image backups again.
Please contact VMware support to complete the block size changing.
