Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition -- with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS pre-installed

Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition -- with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS pre-installed

A month ago the Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition was recertified for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.  This meant that owners were able to self-install the latest LTS knowing that it had been thoroughly tested by Canonical on the XPS 13 Plus.  As of today Dell has taken it one step further and all new XPS 13 Plus developer editions will come preloaded with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS directly from the factory.

XPS 13 Plus developer edition – a radical new look

The Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition is twice as powerful as the previous gen XPS 13 and features a major visual redesign.  The overall aesthetic for the XPS 13 Plus is a simplified, futuristic look with an edge-to-edge keyboard, an LED function row and no visible touchpad (the touchpad is embedded in a single piece of glass running across the whole wrist rest).

In addition to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, the developer edition comes with

  • 12th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor
  • Up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage
  • A 13.4 inch, FHD+, 3.5k OLED or 4K+ display
  • Intel® Killer™ Wi-Fi 6E 1675 (AX211) 2x2 + Bluetooth 5.2 Wireless Card

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Highlights

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS features the most recent version of GNOME 42 and Wayland ships as the default display server.  It also comes with the latest toolchains for Python, PHP, Ruby, Perl, GCC, Go and now Rust. It includes the latest versions of default productivity apps like LibreOffice, Thunderbird and Firefox, with thousands more applications available in the snap store.

Back to the beginning -- Community driven and giving back

It’s been nearly 10 years since Dell’s first Ubuntu-based XPS 13 developer edition became available.  The effort, known as Project Sputnik, began as an exploratory project to determine the interest in an Ubuntu-based developer laptop.  To gauge interest, Dell publicly reached out the community and asked developers if they would be interested in a Linux laptop and if so, what they would expect from it.  The response was so great that it wasn’t long before the project became a product and then an entire product line.  As Project Sputnik has expanded, input from the developer community has continued to help guide the effort and its way forward.

A key tenet of Project Sputnik has been to contribute back to the community.  To that end, Dell has worked hand in hand with Canonical and hardware component vendors to ensure that the Linux drivers that are written for the XPS 13 are open sourced and whenever possible pushed upstream to the mainline Linux kernel for all to benefit from.

Availability

As of today, the Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is available in the following countries (available configurations may vary by country):

Hi Barton,

I am looking to buy Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition with pre-loaded Ubuntu 22.04. Unfortunately, India is not listed in the countries where Dell XPS 13 Plus developer edition  is available.

When it would be available in India?

This is good news.

Last autumn, I bought the Dell Vostro 15 7510 (i7 11th gen + Nvidia RTX GPU) as I thought Dell laptops were compatible with Linux/Ubuntu. I installed Manjaro aside Windows.

But I'm facing an issue with the fans and I don't understand how to fix it, though the hardware is working good under both Windows and Linux :

- Windows 11 : the fans are quiet.

- Manjaro 21.3.4 : the fans are constantly running.

- Ubuntu 21.04 Live : the fans are constantly running.

- Ubuntu 21.10 Live : the fans are quiet (issue fixed).

- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Live : the fans are constantly running once again (fixed is broken).

- Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS Live : the fans are quiet again (issue is fixed again).

I wish someone could tell me what is done by Ubuntu boot process/config to get the fans managed by the OS instead of UEFI BIOS, as the fans get quiet when booting under Ubuntu 21.10 and 22.04.1 LTS versions.

That way I could try the same configuration/setting under Manjaro. At Ubuntu boot process, the fans get quiet before starting Ubuntu's ubiquity, so i presume it's a kernel configuration and/or an activated driver/firmware at bootup.

I've got mine 10 days ago so I am missing 22.04 out-of-the-box.

I askd for the 22.04 OEM image to perform a clean install it, but tech support refused to offer me that image bacause I already bought mine with 20.04

Big thanks for your long term work, Barton and the rest of the team!

I'd like to note that the Finland link, and Belgium plus everything from Luxembourg forward do not work. I wonder if the domain http://previewconfigure.euro.dell.com/ is internal only? I've tried it last week, this week etc. If it's an URL the retailers can use then that'd be useful information when asking a quote.

There hasn't been an Dell's own online store in Finland earlier sadly, and the retailers do not offer or mention Ubuntu models at all unless specifically asking a quote, so at the moment Lenovo has the upper hand here.

It used to be different from just two years ago when XPS 13 Dev Edition and sometimes other models too were widely available in online stores around here, I'm not sure if there's anything the marketing department could do to fix back issue.

I'm writing this on my Dell XPS 13 9310 Ubuntu edition though, I went through the trouble in order to get one. But generally and as part of Ubuntu Finland website I need to currently recommend Lenovo web store with multiple Linux options or the one retailer that luckily does offer a couple Dell Ubuntu models (but not XPS 13).

Just like in @Mirvubu post it seems that http://previewconfigure.euro.dell.com/ resolves to some private network address and that makes that site unusable. @DELL-Barton Ge could you please confirm that address, I'm unable to find developer edition anywhere in Poland.

@Mirvubu and @DustyBlankEagle,

I also get an error message when i click on http://previewconfigure.euro.dell.com/

However, when i click on Poland, Finland, Luxembourg above, the URL takes me to the euro configurator. (see below) Does this second URL work for you?

http://previewconfigure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=pl&ccc=true&cs=plrel01&dm=true&l=en&oc=XPS_Tributo_13_9320_CTO&prod=false&vw=classic&fb=1 ]

@DELL-Barton Ge I ment that this URL is probably for Dell internal use. When you resolve this hostname you'll get a RFC1918 private network address 10.177.14.85 - which is not accessible from internet. Have you tried accessing that link outside corporate network?

Ack, just what the DustBlankEagle said. I'd love there to be a Dell's vendor webshop available in Finland at some point, like Lenovo has, but that has not been the case so far.

When discussing with retailers, they have seemed to have access to custom configurations via some kind of website, so it's possible that URL would be useful when asking for a quote, if they don't find it otherwise. But that's still quite cumbersome.
