Creating clones - very basic question

iam trying to do some testing on how to create clone and how they work. Iam struck . Here what iam doing .

Source LUN - Raid 5 (200 GB )

i created a clone LUN (Raid 0) with exactly the same size as source LUN (same block size)

Use the option "Clone Feature Properties" in Navi , its asking me to add min of 2 LUNS to the CPL . Why ? I was reading it some where the clone LUNS has to be on different SP's also . Is this means i have to create 2 clone LUNS to of 100 GB each on different SP's . Why ?

I have more question on clonning but first this one has to be answered . I already have to snap view guide etc so please don't refer me to unless you think that i really need to read it properly one more time .

Sorry to say this, but yes you have to read the section on Clones in the Snapview guide closer. It sounds like you don't have the Clone Private LUNs (CPL) configured. The CPLs are special LUNs that are 250000 blocks each (about 128MB) and keep track of modified data chunks for the purpose of incremental synchronizations and reverse synchronizations. You need one per SP. The guide will tell you how to set them up and assign them in Navisphere.

Well the symm probably hides that from you because it has to be able to keep track of the changed chunks to do an incremental sync.

The symm is similar to the clariion with the snaps, as the clariion has a Reserved LUN Pool which is similar to the SAVE devices on a symm.

thanks . It was a really a helpful answer . I saw them(doc) asking to create 2 small LUNS but then i thought they are showing it as some kind of testing with smaller LUNs . Is this means , after setting them , i still need to clone LUN = block size of source LUN . correct . so for my testing ,

2 CPL of 128 MB size , 1 LUN same size as source LUN .

I aready have the source LUN .

That answer my question . We use symm and time finder and have nothing like special LUNS reserver for BCV's . That confuses me . Thanks for pointer . Iam good to go now .

Correct. The CPLs are required before you can perform any cloning. Once you have the CPLs configured then you can setup your clones.
