DAE installation gone bad

I have a CX3-40f with three backend buses in use on 4gbps. I have a DAE2-ATA full of 500GB SATA's that I want to add to it for file storage.

I cleanly removed the DAE2 from its previous array (CX300) and have installed it in the rack with the new one. Initially I ordered SFP-HSSDC cables from a third party and they would not connect at all, immediate faults.

So I ordered two cables from EMC and went through the process with Navi Service Taskbar and it said everything was good to go on the installation this time.

But, when I looked in Navi it showed both LCC's on the DAE2 to be faulted. So I rebooted each SP individually and it cleared the LCC faults.

But now BE3 on each SP is showing as faulted and I get this message in Navi:

BE SFP faulted on SP port 3 - SP A
BE SFP faulted on SP port 3 - SP B
Bus 3 Enclosure 0 : Failed - SFP is unqualified - replace the SFP cable assembly
Enclosure SPE : Faulted
Enclosure SPE SPS A : Not Ready


In addition the array that is faulted shows all disk slots as Empty.


I've tried to reboot the SP's again and manually changed the bus speed to 2Gbps for that particular bus. I was told by EMC that these cables were right.

Any help is appreciated.

I did something very similar and it's working great for me. I remove three trays of 750GB ATA disks from a CX500 and installed them into a CX3-40f. I am running FLARE 24 patch 16. The cable I used is 038-003-381. They are plugged into bus 3. Nothing had ever been on bus 3 when this was done. The sticker on the DAE says it is a CX-ATA-DAE-FD. The SPCollect shows DAE2-ATA, LCC version 1.97.
The first three loops have DAE3P DAES with 750G 4Gbps drives.

I just checked and my cables are 038-003-385 - 2.5m SFP-HSSDC

What is the difference? Can I look it up somewhere?

So if I understand right you are putting this enclosure on your only unpopulated bus? The original error (apart from not having the bus set to 2Gb) could have been from using cables not certified by EMC to work with those enclosures.

I have seen a few rare cases where a DAE install fails for one reason or another. The fix was to physically disconnect the enclosure, restart the management server on each SP and ensure that the failed enclosure no longer appears in Navisphere and there are no faults on the array (this may require a reboot of each SP if restarting the management server doesn't help). Once this is done, then follow the normal procedure for adding the enclosure again.

Okay. I'll try it again from the beginning, but these cables are from EMC and I used NST for the install.

I started over on the advice of AranH and it did the exact same thing.

First, the DPE and the DAE LCC's are faulted and the disk slots show empty.

Then a reboot of the sp's clears the faults on the DAE LCC's, but disks are still empty. If I remove the power to the DAE and turn it back on, it will see the disks, but the DPE's BE3 buses are still faulted.

I have engaged my EMC rep for some answers about the cables he sold me in comparison to the part number SHewitt gave me in order to determine if there is a difference.

I would open up a support case at this point. You have tried the simple fixes that most of us are aware of (unless we get an EMCer to chime in on this) and should have support look at this. Let us know what you find out from support if you do open up a case.
