Defrag Tools

Hello,

Still new to the EMC SAN we have purchased. Do I need to defragment the disks like normal Windows servers? If so, what is the best way of doing this? Just doing the defrag from whichever server is connected to each LUN?

Any recommendations on tools? How good is Diskeeper?

In terms of Clariion arrays, yes, you will need to perform maintenance like defragging on the disk, but only at the host o/s level. Peforming defrags at the array level does nothing more than reallocate unused space to create a larger contiguous free space pool to make other luns with. The array has no knowledge of individual files the host puts on the luns.

Unfortunately I do not perform o/s work, so I don't know what the best tool is.

We have used Diskeeper at the past two locations I've worked at and it appears to be pretty solid - All of our Windows Admins think highly of it.

I like the feature whereby you can schedule the time and duration of each scan so that you are not in any way impacting performance (especially during backups.)

The newer version (2007) appears to work on the fly (Real Time) and we are testing it in production right now - So far, it has worked flawlessly...
