MirrrorView - Promoting a secondary mirror
We have 2 cx4-120 clariions. One in Head office, One in DR site
We have a 300GB Lun running in DR with VM hosts. (and an equivalent 300GB running in Head Office)
The goal is to use mirrorview and replicate the LUN data over to head office and have this promoted and running as the primary Image to run our VM hosts.
Can this be done by going into the remote mirror and right clicking on the secondary image and just promote? What will happen to the LUN in our DR site from a VMware perspective. I have little Clariiion experience.
Thankyou

For VMWare and MirrorView you want to install and run VMWare SRM (Site Recovery Manager) with the CLARiiON MirrorView integration Plug-in available from VMWare. This will synchronize the failover VMs and MirrorView volumes.
The "MirrorView Adapter for VMware Site Recovery Manager Release Notes" are available on Powerlink at Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ J-O ~ Documentation > MirrorView > Release Notes
As for MirrorView, you can only have one primary image at any given time. If you promote a image to primary all other images will become secondary images and you will loose access to those secondary images. The exception here is if you break the mirroring relationship, but if you do that you have to start all over again to start Mirroring.
For a better explaination see the White Paper - EMC MirrorView Knowledgebook - FLARE 30—A Detailed Review.pdf

HI,
Thanks for reply. We are getting the following when we try to promote:
The image specified to be promoted will cause the existing primary to become out-of-sync. (0x7152807d)
I did a force promote. Thsi fractured the mirror.
The primary was then added to the ESX host. When I do a re-scan of the disks in ESX I get the following options after selecting the correct LUN:
Keep the existing
Assign a new signature
Format the disk (Clearly I dont want to select this option)
Do I use Keep the existing or Assign a new signature. Can someone tell me the difference?
Thankyou

See the TechBook: Using EMC CLARiiON Storage with VMware vSphere and VMware Infrastructure
Located on Powerlink at: Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > TechBooks
See page 287 Starting Virtual machines at a Remore Site in the event of a disaster.
Also look at the preceeding section on configuring remote sites.
