flash firmware of new drives (AX150i)

Hi, I am new to the AX150i, so please bear with me.
I would like to add additional SATA drives to our AX150i

I am assuming that it is similar to N*tApp, (with which I have experience) first you flash the drive firmware with the EMC firmware and then the drive can be added to the array.

Where do I get the EMC firmware with which to flash the drive?

Thanks,
Dana

Hy Dana,

I hope I did unterstand you the right way.
It is highly recommended to NOT use any third party drives in an EMC Array.
Please consider that you'll loose any support for this system.

best regards
Manfred

Manfred, thank you for the reply.
Yes, you understood the question correctly.

I completely understand that using "third party" drives voids support.

Now that this has been said,
does anyone know where I can download the firmware?

Thank you,
Dana

there is no firmware for drives,
the drives for ax150i when you buy they come already to be installed
and they have the retension clip to seat the drive.

what you sometimes need to do, for upgrade option, is to update
the flare code of the box, it can be downloaded from www.emcinsignia.com
site, before you need to register your ax150i box.

OK,
I found out the details myself.
The drive does not need any special firmware but the info in the drive's HPA and DCO areas needs to be correct for the drive to be properly identified as a suitable drive by the AX150. I tested this and it works fine.

Thanks to all than replied!

Hi, I have the same issue with my AX150. I currently have 250GB stata II drives. I want to replace them with standard Hitachi 750GB drives. How can I have AX150 detect the HPA and DCO areas to recognize the drives. Thanks in advance -D

Can you please explain? Stugling with the same issue now. And DELL/EMC tells me that they do not sell new disks to this solution anymore, so I need to solve it this way.

I have a 500GB disk that works fine in AX100, but it gets reconised as "UNKNOWN". In ax150 it will not show at all. Looking at partition table trough Linux with hdparm now. 500GB disk is 0.33MB big. WTF?

You need to make sure that you are running the minimum supported FLARE OE version required to support the desired drive.  For your arrays: AX100 and AX150, you'll want to review the following document (for each generation of array there is a similar separate document):

AX Series Storage Systems Disk and FLARE OE Matrix

It is available from PowerLink via the following breadcrumb trail (in case the embedded link above should ever change):

Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Hardware/Platforms Documentation > CLARiiON AX Series Systems > CLARiiON [AX100 | AX150] > General Reference

As noted below in the snippet from the PDF, the required FLARE OE is also dependent upon the model number of your 500GB drive.

Doesn't anyone figured out dmandell's tip to modify HPA & DCO areas in detail? Supported hard disk drives for this storage are rare and very expensive.

Hi.

Have you been successful by contacting the user? I did'nt receive any answers by now.

Did anyone else find out, how to modify HPA and DCO for making unsupported disks work

in the AX150?

Best regards,   Jens

Of course you realize that this is an unsupported configuration and not supported by EMC.

Yes, I am hoping that everyone knows and understands that this is the case.

(The AX150i is so old, many users have units that have long since fallen off of support EOL. )

The process only works for the same make and model of drive that EMC uses in the AX150i anyway.

For example,. Seagate ST3750640NS for the 750GB
