How to create Windows shares?

Hello,

We have a newly installed NAS 40 system. I can create folders and copy files to it just fine. However, I do not see a way to create Windows shares. Right clicking on the folder does not give me a share option. I do not have any tools installed on my Win2K PC. Can I download any tools? If so, where and what? Needless to say, I don't have any training in EMC management. This device will have only a few shares and is pretty much reserved for one department. Technically, I am admin of the device, but need some more info to manage it properly. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

alternatively you can use the Celerra GUI - just open http:// , login as nasadmin and then go the the CIFS shares section.

It will give you more options like creating additidional CIFS servers, file systems, ....

I got access denied when I tried to expand the Shares folder. I was able to login and create my share using the http method described in another post. Do you happen to know how I can get around the denied problem, given that I can login to the server via nasadmin?

by default the sharepoint is available to everybody ... did you configure the first sharepoint ? ...cause they probably locked you out.

Not sure where to look. The path to the root is \xxxns0001\fs02. From there I can remotely (via Win2K), change all permissions, create folders, etc. I just get Access Denied when using MMC Manage/Shares to actually see shares or do anything. Are the domain permissions settable via the http method? If so, I could not find out where.

You share folders just like you would do it on a remote windows server. Right click on my computer and select manage, select connect to another computer, enter name/ip of your CIFS server. Click on shared folders, right click on Shares and select New file share. You will see C$ share ..expand that and look for the folder you want to share.

there are Celerra tools, but most of them are for migration type of activities. You can get them from your CE.

when you are in MMC Manage/Shares ..can you right click on an existing share and look at Share Permissions as well as Security tab ?

find your CIFS server name in Active Directory ...right click, properties ..are you listed under Security tab ?

I don't get that far. When I click on Shares I immediately get Access Denied.

Sounds like you are on right track. I am not in the Administrators group, but I do have all rights to the box via my specific login. I did not follow the part about adding the mmc plugin. From where? Is there a special plugin to help manage Celerra boxes?

no - its same plugin you use for managing shares on a regular Windows system - the Celerra is compatible to the Windows API there.

In order to create new share you have to have administrative privileges.
Either by being in the domain administrators group, which is automatically added to the Celerra administrators local group or you can ask your Windows domain admins to add your account to the Celerra's local Administrators group.
