NDMP backups with BackupExec?
Hello!
While performing NDMP based backups of CIFS shares (file systems) using BackupExec, we run in to few limitations:
(1) Only complete file systems (volumes) can be backed up; neither individual directories nor files can be selected for backup.
(2) Cannot use the Backup Exec "Advanced File Selection" feature to filter, include or exclude by file or directory for backup or restore operations.
So, it means that if I backed up a File System using BackupExec and plan to restore a File or a Directory, I have to restore the full File System in order to recover missing files? But, if I restore the file system on its original mount point, I may overwrite other parts of file system? OR if user another CIFS share while restoring, it has to be equal or larger in size than the original file system?
I have a NS20 with v5.6. BackupExec v12.
Also, if DAR/DDAR (Direct Access Restore / Directory DAR) is supported for BackupExec, it can be enabled at time of restore in order to restore individual directories. Is there any configuration that need to be done on Celerra?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Amit

Just in general for NDMP:
Even if only complete FS can be backed up, you should be able to restore selected files and/or directories.
If you restore a whole FS to its original location, you will overwrite your existing data. If you restore to another location, there must be enough free space available, to restore the selected data.
If you want to use DAR/DDAR this needs to be enabled at the time of the backup, because your backup server need to save "positioning data or index data". A non-DAR restore means the entire tape is searched sequentially for the data because no index is available. It is a time-consuming process (depending on the speed of tapes)
To enable DAR, you have to send the environmental variable DIRECT=Y when starting the backup.
If the backup software is unable to exclude files/directories, but you want to exclude directories and or files or filetypes from the backup, this can also be done using environmental variables (f.e. EMC_EDIR01, EMC_EFILE01). Please take a look at the manual "Configuring NDMP Backups on Celerra"
