Problems connecting server_2 aux0 to SAN for NDMP/Backups

I have a NS120 connected to a Cisco MDS9509. I connected AUX0 port of server_2 to do the zoning with the Tape Drives to perform an NDMP backup of the Celerra. I can't get the port AUX0 to establish connection with the MDS, the current status is "linkfailed". I tried to reset both ports (after Rainer_EMC helped me locating the command :-S), and still have no connections. Apparently the fibre cable is working.

How can I check that the AUX0 port is indeen active, how can I check the configuration of this port?

Is there any special configuration in the switch for this connection, or it has to be a regular F port, with autonegociation of speed?

Thanks!

don't need to do anything on the switch side, default port settings are sufficient. Here is my port on MDS 9134

# sh int fc1/25

fc1/25 is up

Hardware is Fibre Channel, SFP is short wave laser w/o OFC (SN)

    Port WWN is 20:19:00:0d:ec:c7:41:c0

Admin port mode is F, trunk mode is off

snmp link state traps are enabled

Port mode is F, FCID is 0xdd0100

    Port vsan is 104

    Speed is 2 Gbps

    Rate mode is dedicated

    Transmit B2B Credit is 8

    Receive B2B Credit is 16

Receive data field Size is 2112

    Beacon is turned off

I don't remember doing anything on the datamovers either, just plugged it in. Did you connect standby datamover  ..if yes can you reboot it and see if it logs-in to the switch.

We have "remote hands" on the datacenter, so I've not been able to look for it myself, maybe I'll be going tomorrow. I wanted to know if there's any way to check the AUX0 port status via console. Have not tested AUX1 connection yet.

When the fiber was connected yesterday I enabled the port at the MDS and I saw link, but not today, and haven't been able to verify any connection in the switch logs (maybe I'm going crazy and never had link).

regular F port, nothing special. Has aux0 ever logged-in, what about aux1 ? Do you have a fiber test to see if there is light coming out from the aux port ? If you don't have one..take a small mirror and put it against the end of the fiber cable ..is there red light reflection in the mirror (do not ever look in the cable itself ..free lasic surgery that you did not ask for )

on MDS : sh log logging | grep "is up in mode"

Nothing from yesterday:

2011 Oct 26 19:01:20 MDS9509-prosegur %PORT-5-IF_UP: %$VSAN 2%$ Interface fc3/30 is up in mode F

2011 Nov  3 00:10:40 MDS9509-prosegur %PORT-5-IF_UP: %$VSAN 5%$ Interface fc2/23 is up in mode F

Port 2/23 is a backup server that was rebooted today... no new connection detected from yesterday, so I'm indeed becoming crazy!

Hi. Finally I was able to go to the datacenter and verify the connections. I have light on both ends (Cisco and Celerra AUX0) and verified that the fibre was working properly. Everything seems to be OK at a physicall perspective. Can I be missing a configuration either in the Celerra for the AUX0 or at the Cisco to establish the connection? I still have "linkFailure"

This is my port settings:

MDS9509-prosegur# sh int fc4/9

fc4/9 is down (Link failure or not-connected)

    Port description is NS120 Blade_2 AUX 0

Hardware is Fibre Channel, SFP is short wave laser w/o OFC (SN)

    Port WWN is 20:c9:00:05:9b:70:5b:00

Admin port mode is F, trunk mode is on

snmp link state traps are enabled

    Port vsan is 5

Receive data field Size is 2112

    Beacon is turned off

    5 minutes input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 bytes/sec, 0 frames/sec

    5 minutes output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 bytes/sec, 0 frames/sec

      0 frames input, 0 bytes

        0 discards, 0 errors

        0 CRC,  0 unknown class

0 too long, 0 too short

      0 frames output, 0 bytes

        0 discards, 0 errors

0 input OLS, 0 LRR, 0 NOS, 0 loop inits

0 output OLS, 0 LRR, 0 NOS, 0 loop inits

The only significant difference there is that I have the trunk mode on (don't know why really).

I have rebooted the standby datamover, and still not logging in either. The standby datamover is connected in the following port:

MDS9509-prosegur# sh int fc7/23

fc7/23 is down (Link failure or not-connected)

    Port description is NS120 Blade_3 AUX 0

Hardware is Fibre Channel, SFP is short wave laser w/o OFC (SN)

    Port WWN is 21:97:00:05:9b:70:5b:00

Admin port mode is FX, trunk mode is on

snmp link state traps are enabled

    Port vsan is 5

Receive data field Size is 2112

    Beacon is turned off

    5 minutes input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 bytes/sec, 0 frames/sec

    5 minutes output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 bytes/sec, 0 frames/sec

      0 frames input, 0 bytes

        0 discards, 0 errors

        0 CRC,  0 unknown class

0 too long, 0 too short

      0 frames output, 0 bytes

        0 discards, 0 errors

0 input OLS, 0 LRR, 0 NOS, 0 loop inits

0 output OLS, 0 LRR, 0 NOS, 0 loop inits

Any ideas?

trunk mode is not the issues, you can it to "nontrunk" or "auto" if you like. This is very odd, try to play with RateMode, Speed.

Yes!... just a couple of hours ago... we decided to replace the cables and it work.... both of them had something wrong (Murphy) and now it's working....

[nasadmin@SRVPRSGRCS01 ~]$ server_devconfig server_2 -list -scsi -nondisks

server_2 :

               Scsi Device Table

name                addr         type  info

tape2               c64t0l0      tape  HP Ultrium 3-SCSI M23Z

jbox1               c80t0l0      jbox  QUANTUM PX500 0033

We are doing the configurations within Dataprotector now.

Thanks for the help!!
