Cannot get Dell Storage Manager Data Collector working
Our previous installation of Storage Manager Client and Data Collector crashed, due to the hard drive being constantly filled with dozens of mdmp files. I deleted them, and they just kept regenerating.
I could not troubleshoot much, as the hard drive would keep filling up with these files, so I thought it best to reinstall from scratch.
I created a new VM, Windows Server 2019. Firewall currently disabled
I accidentally installed the DSM Client first, but then realised it was not the full product.
I then installed SQL Server Express 2019, enabled the TCP/IP protocol as the website mentions. Then I installed the Data Collector.
It seemed to install fine. However, when I try to open the Dell EMC Unisphere Central shortcut on the desktop, it just says:
Problem with Shortcut: The item 'Shortcut.url' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly. Do you want to delete this shortcut? Yes/No
The only relevant errors in the Event Viewer that I can see are:

Hello TheGreenAnt,
Maybe you have this article but I will provide in case you don't:
Article Number: 000120062
Dell EMC Storage SC and PS - How to install Dell EMC Storage Manager with Data Collector
https://dell.to/3J1tFpA
Did you try a Repair install?
If you did and it didn't help you may uninstall, reboot and install fresh, check results.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I was following those instructions (for the 2020 version, not 2019, though)
Everything seemed to install successfully (no errors), but it didn't work afterwards.
If the only way is to reinstall, then I'll try again (though this was already a clean install)

Another fresh installation, and still failed.
1. Install Windows 2019 Server Standard (Activated and fully patched) - No AV
2. Install SQL Server 2019 Express (default Database)
3. Enable the TCP/IP connection as per Dell doco
4. Install Dell Storage Manager Data Collector 20.1.10.79 as per Dell doco
No errors during any installations.
Clicking on the Dell EMC Unisphere icon on Desktop gives the "The item 'Shortcut.url' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly" message as mentioned before.
The errors in the Event Viewer are the same as already posted, with this one in the System Log:

Restarting the server and/or service does not help.
There are log and mdmp files in C:\Program Files\Dell EMC\Storage Manager\msaservice\Java\bin
They are too long to post the content in here though, and I cannot seem to be able to attach the files themselves.

Hello TheGreenAnt,
It is best to open a support case for this as there are a couple of things that support will need to look at to resolve this issue.

Thanks, Sam.
That's unfortunate. I am in a ... "discussion" with Dell at the moment about a warranty renewal issue.
I'll see what they say, though I might try some external support if/when that falls through.

Hi, I just tried to find out about the Storage Manager Data Collector service being terminated unexpectedly. I was looking for similar cases and found that thread. in here Bob mentioned "Is Java installed on the server that the Data Collector is installed on? The Storage Manager Data Collector has an internal Java installed so if there is a second version of Java on the server it may be in conflict with the internal Java. I would suggest to uninstall any versions of Java on the server, and reboot the server. If this is a Virtual Server then take a snapshot of the server before making any changes." https://dell.to/3XQlJMf I'm not an expert but might be related to the necessary dependencies installed such as Java and SQL Server.

Definitely no previous Java installed.
Clean build with only SQL express and data collector

Hi @DELL-Joey C
I was thinking the same thing. Since my last email, I have tried several other configurations, none of them working:
Attempt 4: Same Issue
Server 2019 Std
DSM Data Collector 20.1.10.79 with Internal Database
Attempt 5: Same Issue
Server 2016 Std
DSM Data Collector 20.1.10.79 with Internal Database
Attempt 6: Same Issue
Server 2019 Std
DSM Data Collector 20.1.2.14 with Internal Database
Attempt 7: Same Issue
Server 2019 Std (non-domain)
DSM Data Collector 20.1.10.79 with Internal Database
I'm pretty sure it is related to that error I posted about the "JBoss Process has disappeared". I have no idea what that is, or why it would "disappear".

Hi @TheGreenAnt,
Have you tried other versions of DSM? Probably lower version of 20.1.
It does seem sounds like the shortcut or the DSM execute file has been removed, probably due to antivirus, but you mentioned there is no antivirus installed. Is it possible to test installation on another OS?

Hi @TheGreenAnt,
I've tried searching for any related cases that are similar to yours, only 1 return. And it was resolved by restarting the VM Host. I'm sure you already have done that. Hence, like Sam mentioned, a support case is needed to be open. Probably best to contact the support when you're available.

Hi all,
An update since working with Dell Pro Support.
They asked me to install on a physical machine, instead of a virtual machine. It worked on the physical machine.
They are saying now that they don't support DSM Data Collector on Virtual machines (unless using the Virtual Appliance)
However, they only have a VMWare version of that, while we use Hyper-V.
Still working with them, as the App has worked previously on a Hyper-V Virtual Machine (two separate installs)
I'll update if/when there is a reasonable solution.

Another update.
We're still trying to get to the bottom of this.
We have been able to narrow it down to the Oracle JDK section of the installation failing. (I won't go off too much about my rage at them still using Oracle JDK over OpenJDK...)
However, the JDK fails to install without any indication during the installation process. I kind of knew that already based on the Error logs I posted in my original post. Now, at least, Dell seem to agree with me on that point.
This issue even occurs when we try to install the Dell Storage Manager Client (without Data Collector)
We may need to start approaching Oracle for help...not looking forward to that...
Side note: I have tried the Virtual Appliance option, though that does not include a SQL Server, so is not useful as a long-term solution.

Did you ever get this working? I am running into what appears to be the same issues. Hyper V machine running 2019. The client would open when on version 19, but we could not sign into it.
So we updated to version 20 and now the client won't open. We also get the error jboss process has disappeared.
