Tier how to use?

Hi,

I have the following configuration:

- SSD disk
- 10K disk

- I will create volumes that should use only the SSD disks for database
- I will create volumes that should use only the 10K disk for VMware

  No date progression.

So, I must configure:

- Volumes that will use the SSD, use a profile (Tier 1 - Write: R10 / Snap: R5 / 6)
- Volume that will use the 10K, use a profile (Tier 3 - Write: R5 / Snap: R5 / 6)

But if I did, I would be wrong:

- Volumes that will use the SSD, use a profile (Tier 1 - Write: R10 / Snap: R5 / 6)
- Volume that will use the 10K, use a profile (All Tier)

PS: I understand that if I use (All tier) the data of this volume will be allocated on the SSD disks and not the 10K disks.

Thank you.

Hello Sandro Silva Alves,

Based on your setup you can use tiering or not.  Since you stated that you want your database on SSD’s and your VMware on your 10k drives then you will not be using tiering.  Without using data progression as well you will not be using tiering as the data will not move from tier1 to tier 3 storage.

As for your 10k drives if you set them to all tiers then your data is going to write to tier1 storage first and once that is full then it will start writing on tier 3 storage.  If it was me then, I would set your 10k drives to tier 3 so that all writes will go to those drives.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
