Virtual Backup Slow
I have archive manager for exchange running on a virtual cluster and the backup (ARCserve) speed for that volume is running really slow (140MB/Min). If I map the volume to a physical server and back it up from there the speed improves to about 370MB/Min) still slower than I'd like but at least it can finish the backup over the weekend.
So my questions are two fold. First any idea why this is running so much slower in my Hyper-V environment and what if anything can I do about that? And two, if that is not fixable, is there a way to map that volume to the physical server as a read-only volume. I saw that was an option but when I map it like that the volume is not readable on the second server.
Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks

Hello Shudon,
When running a backup in a virtual environment the speeds are generally going to be slower than on a physical server. Also if you are using GRT this will slow the backup down as it has to create a table of where all data is stored so that if you wish to restore a specific email you can do so without having to restore the whole mailbox. If you have GRT on you can turn it off & it can improve performance.
You can map the volume to a physical server and then backup the disk as a raw disk. I am not sure if Arcserv has a virtual backup License key. I know that Symantec backup Exec and Simpana Commvualt have a license key that allows you to mount a VM & storage to a physical server so it can be backed up. I would suggest that you check with Arcserv to confirm that this can be done.
Let us know if you have any other questions.

Not sure why this was moved to powervault. This volume is running on a compellent san. And I said in my question that it is in fact faster running it mapped to a physical server. And asked how to automate that process.

To automate the process of mapping up a View Volume to be used for back-up purposes you can use either CompCU for non-Windows Opertaing systems, or Powershell for Windows Operating systems. You can either post additional information, or contact Copilot at 866-397-8673, or support@compellent.com in order to request information.
