Isilon CSI driver on Openshift 4.X
Hi
I am looking into setting up Isilon CSI driver on Openshift 4.3 which underneath is running Kubernetes 1.16.
I am looking at this Instrallation document https://github.com/dell/csi-isilon/blob/master/CSI%20Driver%20for%20Dell%20EMC%20Isilon%20Product%20Guide.pdf
and it's prereqs part. My cluster nodes are CoreOs nodes and are sort of immutable. All configuration for master and nodes is done inside the cluster , not directly on the nodes.
Before I start I would like to know if this is at all possible? I read on this page that the only supported nodes are RHEL7
https://www.dell.com/community/Containers/FAQ-CSI-Driver-for-Isilon/td-p/7430920
I am not sure if that is applicable?
I would appreciate any hint/help/comment on this.

Hi ya bortek,
Although you may be able to get it to work on your own, we don't officially support OpenShift quite yet with the CSI driver for Isilon. We are working on supporting OpenShift version 4.2 with the 1.1 release of our Isilon driver coming later in April. That will be based on RHEL nodes with CoreOS nodes coming in a later release after it is qualified.
Thanks
Bryan

Thanks Bryan for quick reply! Then we know it is in the pipe in will be coming out soon.
Also I would like to suggest you to review installation documentation and make sure it is located in one place which is easy to find and where all the other sources point to.
Right now Docker hub page points to Github. On Github page it says the code is not supported and the images has to be fetched from docker hub. On Github I had to scan through all directories to find the install doc (which is mentioned without any real link to it) but in reality it turned out to be in a PDF file in one of the directories.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll work with the rest of the product team to try to clear up those confusing statements.

Any news on this and specifically for CoreOs node support in the 1.1 version that's just been released?

Hi Bortek,
The 1.1 release of the Isilon CSI driver supports OpenShift 4.2 with RHEL 7.x worker nodes using the operator installation method
https://github.com/dell/dell-csi-operator
https://www.dell.com/community/Containers/FAQ-CSI-Driver-for-Isilon-v1-1/m-p/7430920#M50
CoreOS for the workers still remains on the backlog for qualification.
Thanks
Bryan

Hi!
Its mid summer now and I wonder how are we keeping up with the pace of development. Openshift 4.4 (with kubernetes 1.17) has been out for some time now and Openshift 4.5 (on kubernetes 1.18) has also been released and we will upgrade to in after the summer.
Current Isilon/CSI driver supports kubernetes 1.16/Openshift 4.3 which is kinda obsolete nowadays. What are the plans for supporting latest versions of kubernetes?

Hi @bortek666,
Our current plan is to release a new version of each driver every quarter to support latest versions of kubernetes and affiliated distributions (upstream, Openshift, Docker EE, etc.).
When we release a new version of the driver, worst-case scenario, we will support the n-2 version of Kubernetes at the date of the release.
For example, in Q3-2020, if k8s v1.19 is out, the drivers will support worst-case 1.17.
In fact, and to be precise, if everything goes according to plan, we are targeting support for k8s 1.17-1.19, Openshift 4.4 and some will have Docker EE 3.1 in the upcoming release early fall.
I hope this helps.

Hello guys!
Can you give us an update on the current state of the CSI Isilon driver and in particular in regards to Openshift 4.4.X?

Hi @bortek666,
It is now only a matter of days before the release of csi-isilon v1.3.0 which will add support for Openshift 4.4
To be notified as soon as it is released you can "watch" it from https://github.com/dell/csi-isilon

Does that include support for CoreOs nodes in Openshift 4.4 cluster?

Yes, both RHEL and RHCOS will be supported.
