Fake Dell support call

I received a call on Monday, May 28, from a guy (sounded Indian) claiming to be from Dell Support saying that they have seen error messages from my laptop and want to investigate. He got me to check the event viewer and told me the errors I am seeing there are due to a trojan. To fix the issue he asked me to download an "exe" from a website "www.support72.com".

I told him I am not comfortable doing that and said I will directly call Dell Support as it's not clear to me if he really is from Dell Support. He tried to hang on by telling me he will give me his employee id, manager's id etc., but on sensing I am unlikely to relent hung up abruptly.

I am not sure who else is receiving these calls and so thought of reporting it here. Additionally, I am not clear how they got hold of my contact info. I recently sent my laptop in for some repair work, could that have compromised my details?

I too have been receiving these scam calls and got another one today. They are spoofing the Dell service number, which shows-up on your phone but is not the actual calling number. I unfortunately fell for this scam the first time a couple of months ago when they supplied me with all my correct service support data, contract expiration date and Service-Tag number. I had fraudulent charges made to my credit cards, had to wipe my computer clean, replace all my credit-card and reinstall everything, at a great PC support cost and a lot of my wasted time. How they are getting this Dell contract information needs to be investigated.

The way their scam worked is to get remote-control of you PC and ask you where your modem is located. They then send you away to your modem to "watch for the red-light." While doing that they access your credit-cards and initiate fraudulent charges for gift-cards that are picked-up by confederates at places like Walmart.

Even after disconnecting your PC and restarting it, they continue having remote-control of it and wait for you to be away from the screen to try it again. I was fighting with them for control of the cursor every time I used the PC! The only way to fix this was to completely wipe the PC clean, reload a new Windows OS and reload all the apps and fortunately had backed-up all the data-files so could then restore them.

I see that this has been going on now for over 3 years and Dell needs to do something about it, especially since their having gotten access to the Dell service contract-expiration information that they are using in this scam.

Oh believe you me I KNOW how to get rid of those false Dell tech (indian) support calls - just got one @2:45 PM eastern time...But my question is to Dell : How do they know my name?? How do they know I have a laptop?? Makes me think Dell is not correctly protecting the information of their customers...
