Upgrading Dell XPS 15 L502x

Hello to everyone,

I am about to make a shopping list for upgrading an old Dell XPS 15 L502x with a  2ND GENERATION INTEL CORE I5 - 2410M CPU. After doing some digging around and searching online I am of the impression that 'theoretically' it may be possible (depending on the BIOS version), Adaptor ratings (150W) and adequate ventilation, to swap the i5 2410 with a faster i5, or even upgrade to a similar architecture and family of core i7 cpu (2nd Gen).

The laptop is out of warranty so this is not an issue, so is the work details involved as I have taken these apart, cleaned them and reassembled them with little difficulty.

What I need help with is first the technical details as to which range of processors are possible to use in the i5 and i7 lines, and whether this is feasible from a cost:benefit side. I am willing to take the plunge if for no other reason that the exercise itself if it is not too expensive (and as these are readily available on eBay these days it should not be too expensive (my assumptions)?

While on the subject of upgrades, I also have a second XPS 17 L701x with a 1st Gen 470QM i7 CPU that I may consider doing the same (within the 1st Gen) possibly to a 850QM or even 8XM or 9 XM lines.

Any links or suggestions advice would be appreciated, and my apologies if this thread / question has been done before as I am quite new to this group.

Many thanks in advance,

a happy dell boy! :D

You need to stay within the first generation (L701x) or second generation (L502x) CPU lines - you cannot advance a first generation L701 to a second or subsequent generation CPU, nor a 502x to a third or subsequent generation CPU).

Also important:  stick to a CPU of 45W or lower - more than that and the system will overheat.

Other caveat:  first generation i7 quad CPUs have no GPU aboard -- so they can be used ONLY on systems that have discrete video (not those that depend on integrated graphics).
