CIFS configuration for SQL backups to Data Domain

I have been reviewing documentation and reaching out to my EMC account team, but am looking for some implementation advice for setting up CIFS on Data Domain to backup SQL databases.  I have a few questions regarding the setup.

1.  Is it required to join the CIFS server to the domain or can it reside on workgroup?

2.  When creating the CIFS share, is there a way to specify how large the share can be or can we set retention from the DD?

3.  When creating the CIFS share, do i need to create a directory under /ddvar for specifically for the SQL backups?  Or if i specify /ddvar in the CIFS share create command, will it just use the root of /ddvar?

For example, when I typed in /ddvar/SQL_log, I got the error message that the directory doesn’t exist.

4.  How is replication setup to the target DD?  Since we aren't using DD Boost, will the DD do the replication?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

mgrammer,

1) It is not necessary to add the DataDomain to an AD domain.

2) Here is information on setting MTREE Quotas:

180995 : MTree Quotas in DD OS 5.2
https://support.emc.com/kb/180995

3) Please do not create any shares under /ddvar.  That folder is for system files.

4) Here is information on setting up replication:

180562 : Replication FAQ

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Best Regards,

Patrick
