Install a ES30 Diskshelf to a DD640
Generic:
We have bought an extra disc shelf (2nd one) to our DD640 full with 1TB disc . To be able to backup growing computer 1 and 0.
Installation:
Hardware
- Setup the hardware into the Dell Racks was no big deal it even included cables for me to connect the shelf. Its recommended to connect it in two set (one we already have)
- Connected the SET2 according to docu51570 which is for DD640.
- Connected the powercables, waited for more than 3minutes
Software
Now we are using 5.4 and its license based for an extra shelf. thats is covered in other documents. There are two documents that do cover some docu50985 and docu50305. But the thing in DD640 is that it has the a limit of connecting shelfs as bobt@dd typed below.
Add license (i did that in GUI) system settings/license than add license
SSH to the DD640 and run commands (show for confirmations and others for do stuff)
> storage add enclosure
> storage show all
> filesys expand
> storage show all
> alerts show current
Thx for help on forum and support - Mail and Chat from EMC this was done without any problem.
thx Pontus Ankarbåge, Borlänge kommun
btw (verdana-font should be youre default font according to EMC type if not using META )

Docs do cover this subject - follow guidelines and you can't go wrong.

The documents are pretty straight forward. Make sure that you are not exceeding the maximum raw storage of the system and that your DD640 has 20Gb of memory. A DD640 will take only (2) 15 TB enclosures.
We do recommend powering off the system to add the enclosure. Power on the system once the enclosure is cabled and once the system is booted, add the enclosure to the volume. Then expand the filesystem.

Hi bobt, With "power off the system" for you mean the Data Domain itself (the "head") or the DD including all shelves ? Thanks ! --josb

The head at a minimum.
Personally, I would shut down the head and the enclosures, cable everything up, power on the enclosures, wait for all the external disks to spin up, then power on the head. It may take a bit more time but it will make sure that everything gets initialized properly.

Don't forget to run (assuming your DDOS is not ancient);
