PACS Backup - Healthcare

Hi All,

I hope you all are doing well. I need a backup solution to protect the following environment:

a) PACS Images

b) PACS Application (Windows Based + MySQL)

c) Health Care Application (HIMS) (Windows  + MySQL)

I have the following questions:

a) Will data domain be a good backup target for storing PACS image backup? Will I get any benefit of dedupe and compression offered by DD?

b) They have a virtualised (Hyper-V) environment, shall I recommend them Avamar or Networker? or shall i do a flat copy of PACS Images?

This is a healthcare org focussing on oncology (cancer research) and just starting up in this region. I have no experience of backing up a PACS system before.

Are there any questions you would suggest - I should ask my Healthcare Application provider / PACS app provider? currently we have a few servers and a Mid-Size SAN Storage.

will be grateful for your assistance on this - Thanks

You'll certainly want to talk to your PACS vendor about your options.  Different vendors have different methodologies for handling short-term archive, long-term archive and recovery for PACS imaging.  For example, some vendor products are architected to handle multiple "tiers", i.e. moving PACS images from one CIFS share to another CIFS share as they age.

Depending on the size of your organization, "backup" for images won't be practical.  Having to read each image for backup, can lead to very lengthy backup times.  Maybe replicated object stores (such as ECS) are a better solution?

Let us know if that helps!
