Announcing Avamar 7.5

Companies are redefining their backup and recovery solutions to meet the growing need of improved data protection for the public and private cloud, across the enterprises well as remote offices. IT faces additional challenges brought on by accelerated virtualization, converged infrastructure, and shrinking backup windows. Dell EMC Avamar software and system provides flexible deployment options for fast, daily full backups and is part of the Data Protection Suite Family.

On June 28, 2017 Dell EMC announced Avamar 7.5, which delivers improvements and enhancements to address the most prevalent data protection requirements of today’s enterprises.

The release of Avamar 7.5 follows the themes of simplified, high performing, and cloud-enabled data protection.

Cloud Enablement

Here at Dell EMC, we are committed to helping our customers simplify protecting their mission critical applications and data within in the public cloud.

That is why we are pleased to announce that Avamar 7.5 delivers support to protect clients and applications running natively in both Amazon Web Services and Azure using Data Domain Virtual Edition 6.1.  Administrators are now enabled to orchestrate data protection within the public cloud and can natively control data movement policies from within the Avamar UI. Avamar Virtual Edition configured with Data Domain Virtual Edition is a software-only solution that is simple to deploy and will scale to 16 TB.

Dell EMC also offers one of the only data protection solutions for OpenStack and, with Avamar 7.5, customers can take advantage of Change Block Tracking (CBT). CBT improves backup performance for KVM image backup of the OpenStack Nova instance. With CBT, customers only needs to backup changed blocks - and every backup is forever incremental! To further improve performance, customers can now do parallel backup as opposed to single threaded AV proxy. With CBT for OpenStack, backups will complete in a fraction of the time.

Whether you already have apps running in the cloud or are in the process of moving to the public cloud – Dell EMC has the data protection solution that will scale to meet your immediate and future needs.

VMware Virtualization

Avamar continues to provide robust data protection for VMware and, with 7.5, we have added enhancements to Image Backup.  Data exclusion of image backup allows for exclusion of the windows page file (pagefile.sys) from backups.

In addition with last backup annotation you can display the last backup date/time regardless of the complete state as well as the last successful backup.  In addition to the Image backup enhancements, Avamar 7.5 File Level Recovery User Interface now enables self-service recover from your VMware image backups.  Avamar FRL for VMware image backups understands the user privileges and will allow the end user to browse and restore files with the appropriate permissions. Administrators are taken out of the equation, allowing them to focus on higher priority tasks.  In addition, you are provided flexible recovery options including recovery of multiple files, single files or folders to the same or new location.
