OME discovery using the OMSA protocols (OMSA VIB)

We've used Dell OMSA for years, monitoring VMware ESXi hosts by loading the OMSA VIB package on the VMware host.  Can't OME use the same OMSA VIB package on the host to discover and manage details of the VMWare host.  I did discovery of an ESXi host, and discovery worked (correct root and password credentials) but the information returned was very limited.

I then did a discovery using iDRAC, and more information came back.  But can't OME use the VIB on the host to communicate with it?  OpenManage Essentials did use the same VIB package on the VMware host that OMSA used.

Some of our VMware hosts are older with older version iDRACs-- management through the iDRAC will be limited.

Part of what I am confused about is the best practice for discovery of a VMware ESXi host using hardware with an older version iDRAC.  I especially need to monitor hard drive, fan, and power supply status.  The older iDRACs don't show all that, but standard Dell OMSA does.

Thank you in advance.

Hello

This is covered in the support matrix on the OMEnt support page. There is a list of supported agents and how they are used.

http://www.dell.com/openmanagemanuals/

11th generation systems with the iDRAC6 were reliant on OMSA as an agent for a lot of monitoring and management. 12th generation iDRAC7 systems added a lot of agentless features that reduced the need for OMSA as an agent. OMEnt is designed for the newer systems that are less reliant on OMSA.

Thanks

So by this you mean that OMEnt does not and cannot use OMSA for discovery or monitoring; and there is no way to add this capability to OMEnt.

Here is the link to the support matrix you referred to.

https://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_software/esuprt_ent_sys_mgmt/dell-openmanage-enterprise-v32_Support-Matrix_en-us.pdf

Not easy for a non-expert to find information.  P3 on the top seems to imply that OMEnt can only use OMSA for hardware alerts.

Dell EMC system agents and interfaces                                                                                 Supported version
Dell EMC OpenManage Server Administrator—for monitoring device alerts only                 9.0 and later versions

Is my interpretation of your comments and the document you referred me to correct.

Thank you for your quick response, by the way.

Hi Walt,

You can find the complete documentation for OpenManage Enterprise here: https://dell.to/3aML4OR

This is the same documentation we would refer to, so this should be a great place to get started.

The Compatibility Matrix for OM Enterprise 3.2 (latest I could find) lists support for "Discovery and inventory" and "Monitoring and device alerts" 11G servers with iDRAC6s. No asterix, no footnote, just a note above stating that Unknown is the normal status for these servers. If that's the case, what does it monitor, what does it alert on? Why no secondary connection OMSA which is still fully supported? SNMP support? There's no real documentation for anything other than iDRAC support? (Not that I'd call that decent. Describing what you see in the application seems to be about all you get these days).

If that is the totality of the documentation you Dell has to work with, we're in a sorry state of affairs. Other than documentation of RESTful APIs, which is of no use to me, I found nothing that I haven't seen before. A lot of talking about things without useful examples. I guess it sells Professional Services hours.

The User Guide has no clear instructions for anything other than iDRACs for discovery monitoring and alerting. One thing that isn't stated is if you need OMSA installed on ESXi, Windows or Hyper-V servers do discover and monitor them.

I was particularly disappointed when reviewing the support matrix for 3.3.1 that all the RX10 Intel servers have been dropped, while the RX15 servers remain.

Your not alone with your frustration of this product, this is one of the main reasons I have shifted back to Lenovo as I find the xClarity management product much easier to deal with with more features...
