Creating Reports

In ITA, we were able to create our own reports. This feature doesn't appear to exist in OME. Am I missing something?

Oh BTW, when will we be able to schedule/email these on a periodic basis?

Probably not, but thanks for the invite...here goes....we found some of our servers that did not have any mirroring/RAID configuration...unfortunately the hard way! We would like to have a report that shows the RAID level of each of our servers. This is not one to be ran/emailed, just run ad hoc.

The report that we are especially interested in being performed periodically and being emailed is the Warranty Report. We have an aggressive refurbishment schedule that is closely watched.

Thanks.

Good points both.  RAID one is a good idea.  Warranty report sched/email is one I get a lot and I will send over to the marketing guys as well.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi and thanks for the post.

We currently only have the pre-defined reports in OME.  I will pass on your request to our marketing team for:

1. custom reports

2. scheduled/email reports

BTW, what kind of report are you looking to create?  I can pass that along too in the event that it makes sense for a pre-canned report in the future.

Thanks,

Rob

Forgot to mention, though it is not a 1-to-many report, we do have some RAID info on the server inventory page.  Be sure you have OMSA and OMSS installed (discovered via SNMP).

I would also like to request the scheduled/email reports functionality for Warranty as well as being able to customize reports. The OME tool is not very useful without that capability. We are currently using DMC, which is very customizable and extremely useful. From what I have seen thus far with OME, I am very disappointed in the limited capabilities and may not migrate from DMC, but look for another product since DMC will be going away unless these functions are added.

Thanks for your feedback. We will surely get the request for scheduled reports functionality to marketing.

Yep....also, there is a small feature in reports today that some folks do not know about.  If you drag a column to the 'drop space' at the top of the report header, it will allow you to parse out your report in a useful way.

Of course column headers can be sorted by clicking and filters can be created on the columns.  Certainly not a report builder, but I'm just pointing out to folks who may not be aware.

Thanks,

Rob

If you need a business justification, tell the Marketing/Sales boys & girls that from the information provided in that report, it gives management an idea of how old systems are and whether they should be buying new equipment or extending the warranty.  Being able to provide timely, accurate, relevant (i.e. customizable) data/reports allows for good business decisions to be made. I'll either buy a new system or extend the warranty...that might help make a car or house payment! Either way, it keeps Dell in the forefront of their minds. From a technical support perspective, it ensures I have the proper H/W response times in case something goes south.

Heh heh...yeah, They are actually keen to do this feature, especially around warranty.  It's likely just a matter of getting it on the roadmap and figure out which release it can fit into.

Thanks for the feedback and I will forward your comments along.

Cheers,

Rob

Has there been any progress on being able to do more reporting? I'm looking through the help section and don't see what I need. Is there a way to have a report list out all of the systems that are in the critical and/or warning state and list out the hardware components that are causing the alerts?

Thanks for the question.

We've not added a custom report builder yet.  For your issue, you might look at going to Manage | Devices, then clicking on say, the Server node itself.  You will see a grid on the right hand side with all of the servers and crit/warn state.

This grid can be exported (right click, export).   It doesn't list the h/w components that are causing the alerts.  But then again, OME does not really do this that way.  You need to drill into OMSA or the iDrac GUI to see the cause of the h/w state.  Of course, you can look at the Alerts or Logs tab for the device as well.  But as you say, no report at this low level.

Thanks for the clarification.

No...no way to add a new column.  And I know our product team is aware there is some interest in a report editor.  So hopefully we'll see that show up in a future release.

If it helps, hard drive model was added to that report in OME 1.2.  Stay tuned for July when it releases.

Rob

Hi,

We need to get the hard drives models of our servers.

In the Reports tab, we have numerous hard drive information like the size, bus type, vendor, serial number, even the firmware of the drives. But not the models.

Is there a way to add a Model column?

Thanks.

It's a little disappointing that in 2 years there has been no motion on this, and that the reporting is so very limited to start with.  For example, one of the reasons we stood this up suddenly proves to not even be possible, and that is to see a list of all clients and the OS they are running.  For some reason the only report that shows OS as a column is one of the server only reports.  I can't begin to fathom why this is, and now we sit here having invested a lot of time in the product only to discover it can't show us the simplest thing in the end and we need to find a different solution.

Other things that would be infinitely useful:

- Report that shows TOTAL memory by system, not each chip

- Show free space on the Hard drive information report like you see under a client volume information section

- A report that showed BIOS/firmware version

- A report that showed CPU information

Basically what we were looking for is a report that would give us an inventory of systems where we can see Name, IP, primary MAC, OS, BIOS, CPU, Memory, Warranty expiration etc. in one nice spreadsheet  Unfortunately, OME does not deliver any of this at this time.  Even though it has all that information available, you simply can't access it in an easy to use manner.

Hi there and thanks for the post.

I've passed your feedback along to the product owners so they can review your request.

I don't know that this will help, but there is an (older) whitepaper on www.delltechcenter.com/ome titled: How to Build Daily HTML Systems Reports with OpenMange Essentials

Perhaps that will help in a small way, though I've not tried the technique that is described, it might be worth a quick look.

Finally, for the report you are looking for, you are interested specifically in Client boxes right (e.g,. notebook/laptops, desktops, etc.)?

So best case a custom report builder feature, but at a minimum, some Client specific reports as detailed in your post, yes?

Thx

Rob
