Displaying the System Host Name through OME

Hello,

I'm wondering if there is a way to extract/display the system host name in OME.

All devices in OME2.0 is discovered and inventoried through the DNS iDRAC name. Due to our standards, I'm unable to modify the iDRAC name (which is the default name). And how our network is configured, discovering and inventorying by the server name would not be ideal. I would like to display the system host name in order to easily identify the device.

Would that be possible in the current version of OME?

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the post. There is a setting in Discovery Schedule page in Discovery Portal -> Name Resolution. This setting is by default set to DNS which you can change.

Let us know if this helps.

Thanks,
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Thanks for the response. Looking through the Discovery Schedule Setting page, I see the option to either choose DNS or NetBIOS under Name Resolution. If I understand this option correctly, it only discover what the iDRAC is labeled (which is the default name i.e. idrac-serial#) and not the System Host (Server) name.

Is that correct or am I missing something?

thanks

Hi,

Your understanding is correct. When you discover with netbios name resolution, then instead of fetching the name from the DNS server, OME will fetch the name from the iDRAC. The server name will still show up if you have the server and iDRAC, both discovered.

Thanks for clarifying Pupul.I changed the setting on the discovery to netbios instead of DNS, but I'm still getting default iDRAC name (idrac-serial#) in OME. I like to add that I'm only adding the iDRAC devices into OME and not the server name, but would like an option in OME to display the server name.

Also, is it possible to add a column in the Reports page to display the server name along with default columns.

Can this be achieved?

thanks

Hi,

On the reports part, OME does not support creating customized reports till now. You will not be able to customize it.

Like i mentioned in the last post, when you change the setting to netbios you will get to see the iDRAC name and not the server name. If you want to see the server name, either you can change the iDRAC name in the iDRAC console as the server name which will make OME fetch that name. Or, you can make the settings as DNS and then associate the server name to the iDRAC name in the DNS server.

That said, the purpose of netbios is to fetch the hostname of the device. I hope this helps.
