ESXi and SNMP
Ok I have seen this posted a few times with no real clear answer so I am starting a new post specifically for it.
Dell-RobC has a useful tutorial How to configure ESXi for Discovery and Inventory http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/systems-management/f/4494/t/19424735.aspx
That specifically states enabling SNMP on ESXi 4 and 5 with instructions, etc.
There is even a document I got from dell - "Configuring VMware ESX / ESXi with Dell Management Console" by Jeffrey Lunde, and while it is for DMC - I used the document to install OMSA - it also states enabling and using snmp.
But in every post on here where people state having trouble with OME seeing ESXi servers, we are told to no enable SNMP and to delete the device and to create a new discovery range only enabling WS-MAN...
So the question is - Why does the tutorial still state using SNMP if we shouldn't?
If we do enable SNMP, what does it actually do differently?
Also both tutorials mention the CIMOEMProvidersEnabled setting but neither my ESXi 4.1 or 5.0 have that setting.
Assistance please?

SNMP is required for receiving the traps but it is not required for discovery. OME uses WS-MAN to get the data from ESXi. At the same time OME also receives the SNMP traps sent by ESXi server. We are posting an updated white paper today which will provide additional information on this.

Sorry, this doesn't mean discovery will be working, this just means the CIM part will work and OM will be installed on the host.

The CIMOEMProvidersEnabled doesn't show up until you have installed the Dell OM VIB and reboot the host. the setting will show up, you apply it, then reboot again. Test using OM Web Server and you should be working.

I have the OM VIB installed and rebooted a few times for other reasons but I do not see CIMOEMProvidersEnabled
I do see CIMvmw_viProviderEnabled and CIMvmw_OpenManageProviderEnabled and CIMEnabled

One thing to note here CIMOEMProvidersEnabled is for ESXi4 only for ESXi 5 you don't have to set that parameter.
The white paper for ESXi 5 support might have this information.
