New install on remote SQL database is very slow

I tested OME using MySQL and had no problems with response time on the app, in fact it was almost instantaneous.  For our production version I uninstalled all of the OME components, as well as MySQL and reinstalled OME pointing to a SQL 2008R2 instance.

Since then, the web application takes about 5 minutes to load the data on any given page - even the Discovery ranges take a few minutes to load inside the Discovery and Inventory page.

The database server is on the same network as the DellOME server so network lag isn't an issue.  Is there anything we need to set to have it use a remote database that may be missing?

Hi Tim,

Can you elaborate when you say you tested OME with mySQL?  OME ships/supports MS SQL.  Can you provide more details on your setup?

Thanks much,

Rob

Hi,

Thanks for your post. It's not normal to see this kind of delay. Is there any other application using the same DB server?

How many devices are you discovering? There is recommended hardware matrix in the user guide which will list the number of cores/RAM requirements. You can check that to see if those requirements are met.

If the CPU utilization is high, you can move the sliders on the discovery/inventory and status schedules to the left. The sliders are under schedule links located at Manage->Discovery and Inventory->Configuration

Thanks for the updates. From the description, I'm assuming you used SQL express installed on the same server as OME and now you are using the SQL 2008 installed on another server. The only thing to suspect is network connectivity in that case.

Can you try running some other application like SQL management studio on the OME server and try connecting to your SQL 2008 R2? If it's related to network latency, that application might also see slower response from SQL.

Sorry about the SQL version confusion; I mistyped.  I used SQL Express (not MySQL) from the OME install for the original testing.  The full SQL server that I'm using is a new box that doesn't have any other databases on it, so it isn't a problem with the database server being overtaxed.

The slowdown I'm seeing occurs before I even do any scanning, and even after it's configured I'm only doing a discovery and inventory of ~150 servers on 3 networks.  The CPU and RAM usage on both the OME and database servers are minimal.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

SQL Management Studio returns queries with no delay from the OME server.  I notice that some screens come right up, such as the device list, but details on one of the devices take minutes to come up.

Thanks for the updates. Have you tried the reports screens? Do you see the delay in loading details for each device or for a specific device? What happens if you go back to a previously loaded device details page? Does it still take time to reload?

Odd.

How many cores and RAM on the SQL server?

Are there other databases running on it?

Any other software running on it?

Only 150 devices or less....should be super fast.

Thanks,

Rob

The SQL server has four eight-core processors and 32GB of RAM, so I think it should handle this database.  :)

The reports screen has a multiple-minute delay in pulling up any of the reports, without viewing details.

Loading a previously viewed device doesn't speed up anything when you go back to it.

I also tried uninstalling again, this time making sure that the database was completely deleted by the uninstall process (it was).  After reinstall I'm seeing the same slowdown.

The only non-standard thing in the configuration is the fact that we're using a non-standard SQL port to communicate over, but we have a DB alias set up on the OME server, so the software shouldn't have to worry about that.

Thanks,

Tim

Thanks for the updates Tim.

It does look like the database connectivity may be slower for some reason since device summary and reports both pages which are based on DB access are rednering slower. I assume you didn't have that issue earlier when you were using SQL express on the local box.  Some of the queries OME runs are more extensive than others and unless we run the same in management studio it would be hard to compare the performance of the two. I would suggest looking at the network link/bandwidth between OME and SQL server.

If nothing is obvious, you may want to open a support ticket. Here is the number 800-945-3355

Thanks for the help, Abhijit.  I'll call the support number and post what happens afterwards.
