OpenManage Essentials on Linux?
Does OpenManage Essentials only run in Windows Server 2008? Is there a version that will run on Linux? We don't run Windows Servers in our environment.
Thanks,

Hi and thanks for the question.
Right so OME will install on Windows 2008 and Windows 2012. Though we do manage/monitor/patch Linux servers, we do require a Windows Server OS for the management station. Some folks who run Linux shops will put OME in a VM. But that doesn't work for all.
For 1:1 management, the iDrac console or OMSA helps. For 1:n some folks use Nagios on the Linux side.
Thanks,
Rob

Yeah...
There is a vCenter plugin tool, but not sure if that would meet your needs.

I thought there was an OMSA solution that could be installed elsewhere and pointed at the ESXi.

Maybe the vCenter tool could help.
Thanks,

Thanks for the reply.
What are my options for seeing all the hardware details for an ESXi 5.1 server while the server is up and running?
Running Windows in a VM or otherwise is not an option. The DRAC interface doesn't show enough details. On ESXi, the omreport / omconfig CLI no longer works.
I want to be able to see all the details of the RAID configuration, firmware versions of the system and each component, eg., RAID controller, disks, etc...
Thanks,
M-

Oh yeah, and I guess folks will do racadm or wsman scripts as well, though more work.

Not sure if you are 11g or 12g.
Thx

"No Linux support" means I don't buy your product. It's that simple.

Thanks for taking the time to post.
And just to be clear, Open Manage Server Administrator _does_ install on Linux. And many of our command line tools run on Linux as well.
OME, which is a free product, so you don't have to purchase, does require a Windows Server OS. And of course, though OME is installed on Windows, it does monitor Linux targets or any targets that have an iDrac so you can do out-of-band management.
There is also a bit more background on DellTechCenter.
Again, thanks for your post and I'll be sure to pass it along to the product folks.
Regards,
Rob
