SQL Server 2005 Management

My apologies if this is the wrong forum, but can anybody advise about tools for SQL Server 2005 Management? Specifically, I want to change from full to simple recovery mode. And the advice I have to date is that I need "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio". The problem is that Microsoft only appear to have "SQL Server 2005 Express". For the std (non express) version, I'm told the tool is on the original installation DVD. But it's not on my "W2008 Std x64 installation". So, can anyone advise how I can get a hold of the appropriate Management Studio package? Alternatively, can anybody advise another method (step-by-step, please)?

The Server in question is a PE2900, Windows Server 2008 standard, x64, running SQL Server 2005 for: BackupExec 2012, TrendMicro WFBS-A v7 ScanMail and Sharepoint Services (wss3.0). The SQL database for Sharepoint is the default, namely Microsoft##SSEE.

Thanks

Yeah, the general sys mgt forum might be good.  Or maybe a SQL specific one.

I asked around and got some info for you.  I'll copy/paste below :-)

SQL Server does not need Management Studio to perform any action.

You could use the SQLCmd.exe utility to run this script against your database.

ALTER DATABASE [OMEssentials] SET RECOVERY SIMPLE WITH NO_WAIT

From the commandline type “sqlcmd /?” to get instructions on running the commandline utility.

It is easier in SQL Management Studio and this is what you will need.

You also may not have the sqlcmd.exe utility if you are trying to run commands against a remote SQL Server instance.

Firstly get yourself a copy of SQL Server Management Studio 2012.

Get the 2012 version as it will also work with SQL Server 2005 (all editions) and can also support the newer versions.

Don’t worry that it is for SQL Server Express as Management Studio is the same thing as a full version.

All capabilities that are specific to professional or enterprise versions are not related to management studio.

This Microsoft chart shows no differences:

Here is the Microsoft link to Management Studio 2012.

For SQL Server running on a 64bit system you’ll download one of these three:

ENU\x64\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe   (This one has everything)

Express with Advanced Services (contains the database engine, Express Tools, Reporting Services, and Full Text Search)

This package contains all the components of SQL Express. This is a larger download than “with Tools,” as it also includes both Full Text Search and Reporting Services.

ENU\x64\SQLEXPRWT_x64_ENU.exe

Express with Tools (with LocalDB) Includes the database engine and SQL Server Management Studio Express)

This package contains everything needed to install and configure SQL Server as a database server. Choose either LocalDB or Express depending on your needs above.

ENU\x64\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe

SQL Server Management Studio Express (Tools only)

This does not contain the database, but only the tools to manage SQL Server instances, including LocalDB, SQL Express, SQL Azure, etc. Use this if you already have the database and only need the management tools. This package includes LocalDB.
