"DSM Essentials Task Manager" Service Fails to Start
I did a clean install of OME 1.1.0 on a fresh build of Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. There is no other software installed on the server other than the prerequisites that OME 1.1 prompted for and during installation a new database was created on a remote SQL Server using Windows Authentication.
I can't get the "DSM Essentials Task Manager" service to start:
Windows could not start the DSM Essentials Task Manager service on [EDIT].
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
The only other related error I could find was in the Windows Application Event Log:
Log Name: Application

How can I get support to resolve this error? I've tried running an MSI repair as well as a full reinstall.

Couple of things to check:
Port 1279 is used by DSM_OMSE_TaskManager service. Make sure this port is enabled and available.
You can also check this KB article from Microsoft related to this error:

Hi and thanks for the post.
There is an OME Restart service button in the OME console preferences section. Can you try to click that and see if the service stay started?
thx

The knowledge base article doesn't apply; the error message is not bogus. The service never starts. Windows Firewall is disabled and no other firewall is installed. No other software is installed that would be blocking that port and NETSTAT does not show port 1279 in use.
I've pressed the OME restart button that flashes in the scoreboard area on the OME screen many times. The service simply does not start.
Better logging to identify the problem would be helpful.

After hitting that Restart Services button now the "DSM Essentials Network Monitor" service is also stopped and I'm getting the same error as for the Task Scheduler! What exactly where those 'few other things'?
I'll open a support case tomorrow morning.

Under Preferences, there is a restart button. Did you try that? It restarts the services and a 'few other things'. So it is different.
There are some log screens in OME, but maybe not useful for this service issue. It looks like we may need to collect other logs and I'l need to get you to open a ticket to do this (800-945-3355 ).
Thanks,
Rob

It re-creates the ODBC (db) connection. Yeah, let's get a ticket so we can look at the logs.

Checked all windows updates and all were installed. Just rebooted again DSM Essentials Task manager service didn't start automatically. I attempted to manually start it and got the same error. The error is 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Only dependency on the service is SNMP and that is started. Guess I will give a repair install a try, and then unintall.

Hi,
We had seen this issue when OME 1.1 was installed on a non-activated Windows system. Can you confirm this was a fresh install of OME 1.1.0, (not upgraded from 1.0.1 -> 1.1.0 or from ITA to 1.1) and also Windows is genuine (activated) ?
Thanks,
Raj Shresta

The version of windows is Genuine and activated. This was an OME 1.0.1 to 1.1 upgrade.

This was an upgrade from 1.0.1 on a Sever 2008 R2 with MS SQL 2008 light that was packged in 1.0.1. If needed I don't mind blowing away the sql DB as I already deleted all the inventory ranges and re-created once.

Hi Patrick,
Is this a new OME 1.1 install? Or an upgrade from OME 1.0.1?
Thanks,
Rob

I am having the same issue. Firewall allows all port 1279 connections, check netstat and saw no listening port on 1279. Tried to telnet from localhost as well as another host in the subnet with no luck. When restarting the Network Monitor service does not restart. I tried manually starting the Network Monitor service and it will start manually but the DSM Essential Task Manager will not start period. Also tried the Preferences > Restart and a good ol' reboot with no luck. Hope to see an update on the forum for this one!

DSM_OMSE_TaskManager_32.exe is not starting as one of the windows system dlls "WS2_32.dll" is crashing on unload.
Before you decide to re-install, make sure all the latest Windows updates are enabled and applied on the operating system. Reboot the system and check again.
Thanks,

Did a full uninstall of OME 1.1 and support assist, blew away the database and rebooted. Did a clean install on the new DB on SQL Express. Unfortunately same deal as before DSM Essentials Task Manager failed to start, restarting through the WebUI caused Network Monitor to not restart, manual start of Network monitor is successful but not DSM Essentials Task manager. Same error to boot, 1053. Tried the iisreset with Admin privileges no luck. Colossal fail day for me ;)

Repair install with deleting the DB completed but the DSM Essentials Task Manger still failed to start. Tried the red arrow restart which killed the network monitor task as well, then tried the Preferences > Restart with no luck. Manual start from services.msc still didnt work. The firewall was/is disabled for all profiles and adapters. Time to try a complete un-install and go from scratch.
