A few questions about upgrading my graphics card - Dell XPS 8300

Jump to solution

Hello everyone, i have been contemplating changing my video card for some time now but haven't really looked up specifics..

Currently, i would want to put an Geforce GTX 650 ( This ) inside of my existing computer of which i am told meets the minimum power supply required in order to use this particular card

What i'm worried about is I have read a few forums about BIOS issues with the XPS 8300 and i also am not sure if the card will fit in the original case provided by dell.

Thanks in advance.

If your going for that card or similar, go for the 650Ti. Better perfromance and only cost a bit more. You should have 2-6 pin power cables available. You will get double the processing power and be much happier. Here is the 1 GB model

Hi ,

The GTX 650 can be used with XPS 8300 and it should work fine. The card requires a minimum power supply of 350 W as compared to 460 W power supply on your system.

The chassis is also large enough to fit in the card on the PCI express slot.

Please reply for any further assistance.

Thanks & Regards,

How about the BIOS? Do i have to do anything special in order to get the card working on my machine, because i have read articles stating that the GTX 600 series cars are not fully supported by the XPS 8300. according to the specs and your information the 650 ti will also fit in the system, but i am worried about these incompatibilities i have heard about.

Ok. I read that post from 6/12. The card he was trying to use was problably a little more than the 460 watt PSU could handle. Although there have been problems with some of the 600 cards. I will be upgrading my son's 8500 to a HD7850 for Christmas. From what I have read, there seems to be only issues with cards using other than AMD or Nvidia boards. Here is a better look at some options  en.community.dell.com/.../19474677.aspx  The post refers to 8500's but could also help you out. Do you know anyone who has a 600 card? Maybe try installing it and see if it post up. Just an idea.

According to what i have read, nobody was complaining about the 650 or its TI version not being compatable, and considering the fact that 660 and its respective ti work after the bios update provided im no longer really that worried about trying it. I'll order it and see if it works or not in ~2 or 3 days. Wish me luck!

Hope all works well. For an entry type card, I think the 650Ti will meets your needs. Good luck!

Was it the 650 or the 650 ti you went for in the end?
