Alienware Laptops with Desktop Pentium 4's

Question

So what is thier trick? Why can they put a 2.8ghz P4 in a laptop and no one else can???  The funny thing is the 2.2ghz P4-M (mobile) costs the same money as the 2.8 desktop. Whats the deal here? Im looking at a laptop from Alienware maybe in the next few months, and I'm curious. Is the desktop P4 less portable?

The mobile CPU requires less power, so you have longer batery life. The mobile also steps to conserve power. Heat can be an issue with the regular chips.

Various companies have (and do) install desktop processors in laptop models.  This is generally frowned on by most experts due to the obvious drawbacks...more heat & power consumption.  Each to his own but were I in the marked for a portable, I wouldn't even consider one without a mobile processor.

The Dell SmartStep 200N and 250N notebooks use desktop Pentium 4 processors. Frankly, I'd call them a "DumbStep". :-)

I wouldn't touch the Smartstep or Alienware laptop with a 10 foot pole. Probably even get burned at that distance. :-)

Well after research I found that the Alienware and other laptops with Desktop Pentium 4's are AWESOME for speed and gaming...but are TERRIBLE when it comes to battery life. They say it can be as little as an hour of battery life with a 2.8ghz P 4 in a laptop.

I guess if your into LAN parties its ideal, but if you are just lookin for a laptop better go with the 2.2ghz MOBILE versions.
