All new Dells require Pure Sine Wave UPS's?
I was looking at a Precision T5500 and along the way noticed a mention in the T7500 spec that any UPS used with the system should output a Pure Sine Wave, i.e. APC SmartUPS instead of APC BackUPS. The spec on the T5500 had no mention of this.
Is there a way to tell which Dell systems have the requirement for the more expensive UPS's? Perhaps any that are ENERGY STAR® 5.0 compliant?
From the T7500 Power Supply spec:
1100 watts 85%+ Efficiency Power Factor Correcting (PFC) power supply
The system uses a very efficient Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) power supply. Dell recommends only Universal Power Supplies (UPS) based on Sine Wave output for APFC PSUs, not an approximation of a Sine Wave, Square Wave or quasi-Square Wave (see UPS Technical Specifications). If you have questions, please contact the manufacturer to confirm the output type.

There is nothing in the Dell manual, that I (a non-Dell employee user) can access, that says anything about the type of power supply used.

Found the answer. The T5500 is included in the requirement, among others.

I guess they figure if you are going to buy a "business" machine that you can also afford the better grade UPS systems. I worked in commercial/Federal Government computers for many years and in both cases "commercial grade" support equipment, including UPS' were a requirement.
However, some of the high end consumer models also use this type of power supply. Again, if you can afford the high end PC's you should also be able to afford the high end UPS systems.
Sort of, if you have to ask how much you can't afford it.
