the situation is unfortunate, i imagine you got a fx-5200? you are getting a decent deal in getting a $100 off coupon, go buy a ati 9800pro with that. the cost difference between a fx5200 and ati 9800pro is great enough that free wouldve been a bit generous, youre not bad off though, it seems you get to keep your current card which maybe you could ebay? and 100 off. pretty good deal for you.
Yes, you're being unreasonable. Take the $100 credit. You would have paid extra for the video card you wanted anyway. AND PLEASE TURN THE CAPS LOCK KEY OFF SO YOU STOP YELLING AT US.
You definitely need to do a little research before buying a computer. It's not hard, just go to forums like this and ask a few questions, they'll get you straightened out.
You asked for an opinion on if we agreed with you or not. We did not. What do you expect when you ask for opinions? That people will just chime out and agree with you? The funny thing is, there are quite a few posters on this forum that will bash Dell and not a single one posted to agree with you. The only mistake Dell made was to not "upsell" you on a more expensive video card at purchase time. It would have cost you ~$150 more last December. They are willing to give you credit towards a new card after the fact...this is more than reasonable on Dell's part. And I guess we wasted our time trying to explain net etiquette to you.
i wa respomding to your caps loch comment, i thank you for your advice, but i still think that when a company sells you a product and tells you it will do something and when you get that product and it does not do what they say it would they said it was going to they should do what ever it takes to remedy the problem. sorry for yelling.
Not knowing both sides of the story, I'm hesitant to comment on the central question.
One problem may have been if you just told the sales rep that you wanted to play "games". There are a lot of games out there, and many probably don't require anything particularly powerful as far as video goes. The sales rep may not have been knowledgeable enough in that market to know to ask "what kind of games?"
I think the $100 coupon is a good deal. If the computer had originally had the card you'll probably be getting, I doubt you would have gotten a $100 discount on it. So essentially, that's a $100 apology for the frustration you've been having.
frusteration, you wanna hear frustration! now i got another e-mail telling me that the card i have is the correct card (after already being told by tech support that i have the wrong card) and i need to do a DirectX9 update. i did the update and now when i start up a game i get this blue screen with a bunch of error codes and telling my computer is shutting down to avoid any damage. damage from what?!?! this i driveing me crazy.
ive got an intel(r) 82865g graphics controller(i think thats what you were asking for) the games are medal of honer allied assult, enter the matrix and battle flield vietnam.medal and battle field are ea games and matrix is atari.
you have onboard graphics which isnt that great. it would seem you have gotten a very good deal with the 100 dollar coupon, buy a video card, ie a ati 9800pro and your gaming experience will be great. those games typically need a t&l card which the integrated graphics do not support. the overall system performance while gaming will be hugely improved.

I'd have to agree with everything dan39 has said. I'm really shocked they didn't try to sell you at least an nVidia FX5200 video card (you may not have been happy with that one either but it's way better than Intel's onboard graphics). For now, use system restore to roll your computer back before the update you did so things will work for now. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp
Then work with Dell on getting a real video card. What model Dell did you buy? We'll give you some suggestions on video cards. (PLEASE...don't have a Dimension 2400...)

I think part of the customization of the PC was supergluing the Caps Lock key down...

That's strange... what games, in case they're ones I've played and might have some information on?
Also, what video card do you have (there was speculation earlier that it was an FX5200), and do you know if you have the most recent drivers for it?
