CPU Upgrade for Dell Inspiron 660

Hi: what CPU would be available as an upgrade for my Inspiron 660, I currently have an i3 with a 300W PSU?  Is there a compatibility tool available?

Fwiw, for a CPU to work in a motherboard
1) It has to be compatible (often by generation, not only by pin count)

2) The CPU power supply on the mother board most be able to properly power the CPU.  So, CPUs that take more power may not work at all. In some rare cases, a low power CPU may not work in a high-end system.

3) The system must be able to handle the power of the CPU.  This is more of an issue in CPU upgrades to faster and more powerful CPUs.

4) The BIOS must allow that CPU!  The BIOS can be written to allow only one specific CPU on the motherboard.  So, the above does not matter if the BIOS does not allow a specific CPU. :-)

The quoted section below is from the thread that I linked to.

The Inspiron 660 does not support any i7 processors, only i3 and i5, 2nd and 3rd generation processors.

The Inspiron 660 supports the fottowing processors.

 1.80GHz G460 Sandy Bridge, 1C,35W,Q0
 2.70GHz G630 Sandy Bridge, 3MB, 65W, 2C, Q0
 3.30GHz i3-2120 Sandy Bridge, 3MB, 65W, Q0
 3.00GHz i5-2320 SandyBridge Quad Core, 6MB, 95W, D2
 3.10GHz i5-3450 Ivy Bridge Quad Core, 6MB, 77W, E1

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have the latest BIOS version installed.

An upgrade like that on that budget model computer does not yield any discernible performance increases. Better upgrades--faster hard drive, more memory up to 8 gb--only if you don't have 8 gb now. Most 660 models already have 8gb. Best upgrades would be a new monitor if you are using an older model now or saving the money for a new computer with new windows 10 hardware. The 660 is a good computer and can run windows 10 fine.
