CPU Upgrades for Dimension 8200

Heya,

This might be a silly question...I've got a Dimension 8200, and it came with a P4 1.9ghz processor.  Can I just drop a P4 3.06 ghz processor in its place?

Ryanis,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Here are the list or processors that you can put in this system.

Microprocessor type

Intel® Pentium® 4 microprocessor

1.50, 1.60, 1.80, 1.90, 2.00, 2.20, or 2.40 GHz (400 MHz); or

2.26, 2.40, 2.53, 2.66, or 2.80 GHz (533 MHz)

The list that Dell provided is not complete.
They have not updated it to include the 2.6GHz 400MHz FSB
processor from Intel. They  show the 2.4GHz as the upper limit
for the 400MHz FSB system. I'm here to tell you the 2.6GHz 400 MHz FSB
does and is working in my Dimensioin 8200. It used to have the same 1.9GHz
chip that you have.

If in fact you have the later 8200  (Spring of 2002 with the 533 or the 400MHz FSB)
then you can select a faster chip. Like the list says it can only support the 2.8GHz 533MHz chip.

You need the dimension 8250 with the newer chipset to support the 3.06GHz with HT.

I wish I new for sure if the 8200 533MHz system would in fact support the 3.06 chip.
Even if it doesn't support the HT technology. Just for my own personal knowledge I
would like to know what is the upper end of the later Dimension 8200.
I can't relay on Dell for accurate information. They have blown the specs on the
400MHz system as it does support the 2.6GHz chip this is just an example of how there
data is off the mark.

Could the specs of supporting a 2.8GHz chip be following the same pattern.

I wouldn't buy the 3.06GHz chip for the 8200 because of  wasting the Hyper Threading
that is not supported on this motherboard.
