CPU upgrade for a 380 Precision

I have a Dell Precision 380 with Windows 7 Pro installed.  The service tag is <ADMIN NOTE:Service tag removed per privacy policy> and the express service code is
<ADMIN NOTE:Express service code removed per privacy policy>.  I would like to improve on its performance.  Currently it is a 3.6GHZ Intel Pentium 4.  I have been told that the cpu socket is a 775 and that an Intel Dual core E5700, 3GHZ, will be a direct plug in.  Is this correct?  The dual core has a 800 MHZ bus.  I realize I would have to change memory and go to a 64 bit operating system.  What do you think?  Is there a better way?

The 955X Chipset can use Pentium D or single Core Pentium 4,  E5700 does not sound viable in such an old Motherboard.

Thank you for your help.  I found a Pentium D Processor 945 with 4M Cache, 3.4 GHZ and 800 MHZ FSB.  Hope it works as expected.  Happy New year

Make sure to upgrade the BIOS BEFORE changing processor.

There are several Chipset variations so Yours may not work unless you have

Intel® 955X Express Chipset with 82801GB I/O Controller Hub 7 (ICH7)
Intel® 955X Express Chipset with 82801GR I/O Controller Hub 7 (ICH7R)

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 945

Intel® Pentium® D Processor 945 (4M Cache, 3.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) LGA775, Tray

Socket Step Step TDP Ordering Code Spec Code VT-x
PLGA775 C1 95 W HH80553PG0964MN SL9QB No
PLGA775 95 W HH80553PG0964MN SL9QQ No

Boxed Intel® Pentium® D Processor 945 (4M Cache, 3.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) LGA775

Socket Step Step TDP Ordering Code Spec Code VT-x
PLGA775 C1 130 W BX80553945 SL9QB No
PLGA775 C1 96 W BX80553945R SL9QB No
PLGA775 95 W BX80553945 SL9QQ No

I do not work for dell so I don't have access to the BIOS notes on whether a 945 works or not.

I just installed the Pentium D, dual core.  The computer took off without any complainants.  Speed increased from 4.2 to 5.1.  For $30 the 25% increase was well worth it.  Now I will upgrade memory.  Thanks for your help!

I know I'm necro'ing a thread, but since the dual core has been installed, have you (or anyone who has done the same upgrade) had any issues? I just picked up a 380 and am looking at upgrading to a dual core 64bit, then upgrading RAM and GPU. The x1600 just isn't doing it!

Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation myself and need some help. I've already upgraded the GPU and I plan to upgrade the CPU from a Pentium 4 650 3.2GHz to a Pentium D 915 2.8GHz. Apparently you have to have a certain revision of the motherboard for the Pentium D's to actually work or something and I can't find any way to tell thus far.

Just to update this a little bit. I went ahead with the CPU upgrade after discovering that I have the model 0CJ774 motherboard. I installed a Pentium D 915 with BIOS A09 already installed and it worked perfectly.

Now to upgrade the RAM...
