CPUID > 3 setting in A08 BIOS
WinXPPRow/SP2 wouldn't load with CPUID >3 turned off, so, I enabled it (limiting the setting to 3) to install the OS. I have a P-D 3.2 GHz.
Now that I have the OS and all patches installed, should/could I go back and let CPUID display what it wants? Would a particular patch or Intel file be needed to allow XP to recognize the P-D, and...does it gain me anything, either way?

See you have BIOS A08. Don’t recall seeing the Limit CPUID Value option in BIOS version A02 but it certainly appears in Setup after upgrading to BIOS version A06. Noticed the Factory default setting is Off, yet (& I didn’t change it) my setting is On (CPUID Function will be limited to 3). Also note that some operating systems will not complete installation when the maximum CPUID Function supported is greater than 3 (the default setting)?
My very limited understanding of this topic is the CPUID function values provided instructions to programs to increase the performance of the programs when running under a new CPU. For example for Intel I think the CPUID Function Eax = 2 returns CPU configuration data (like L2 cache information). Not sure what the highest CPUID value you can call with the processor you have Intel P-D?

Yeah, I don't know...am just reading now, trying to figure it out. I THOUGHT it just tells the OS the EXACT model of CPU, so that proper INF files can be loaded to tune it.
I just found out about a hotfix (KB892256) for dual (and, dual-core) CPU's that needs to be installed, too, as XP doesn't PROPERLY recognize the P-D...

Just curious, you mention a hotfix from KB892256 who's Knowledge Base are you referring to?

Do you mean Microsoft KB885626 article?
If yes then I’m not sure if it’s applicable since your original post indicates you managed to install WXP + SP2 by setting Limit CPUID Value to ON (3 max). KB article appears to be aimed at problems pre installing SP2? I’d be very wary of using the suggested download since if you already have WXPS + SP2 installed & assume you have correct BIOS? You can always now change Limit CPUID Value to default setting (OFF) (> 3) & see what happens?
As previously stated, it clearly states in Setup that some operating systems will not complete installation when the maximum CPUID Function supported is greater than 3 yet this is the default setting & after BIOS A06 upgrade my setting automatically appeared as ON, a strange situation?Bill Bradley

I had a slipstreamed WinXPw/sp2, so, THINK it's applicable. Some of my benchmark scores went up from between 5 and 30%, so...think SOMETHING changed.
I still don't know about the CPUID, it may just be useful on installation, and, do nothing for performance...
