Can't connect to Primary DNS Server

I have a Dell Inspiron 530

Computer has worked fine for the last year until 2 weeks ago and now can't connect to the internet.

Running Windows Vista on broadband and connected directly to modem by ethernet.  Internet provider has run tests and confirmed modem is fine and it is as my laptop works fine on it.

By re-booting the modem, the internet will work and you can type in a couple of sites and it seems okay but you can't do anything on a site, ie enter details and even if you don't try and enter anything, you can only view usually 2 sites and then it goes again.  However, the network icon shows as on and connected to the internet.

On diagnosis, it says that it cannot access the Primary DNS Server.

Do you have any idea how I can solve this or should I just completely re-install windows from the original set up disc?

Thanks but I have already done this.

My internet provider has run me through all sorts of checks - can't remember them all but disconnected and reconnected network connection and by using the command window, cleared DNS cache and released and renewed, also done something to do with ipconfig

They checked all settings on the PC and were happy that everything was set as it should be on the computer and therefore told me to refer to Dell as the problem is with the Windows DNS server.  As I say when I run a diagnosis, it does say that it cannot connect to Primary DNS Server.

I just don't know what to try next or if I should re-install Windows or if this will not even solve the problem.

Check to make sure the DNS server listed (use ipconfig /all in a command window) is the correct one.  If it is not, scan for malware.

Additional thoughts...

If you're correct about the timeline, this might have been caused by an update on Microsoft's Patch Tuesday in Oct.

I had a similar problem right after Patch Tuesday. I could get to my home page but nowhere on the net. I ran a couple of scans and found registry errors related to Microsoft's .net framework v1.0. I allowed the scanner to remove those registry errors and the internet problem was fixed.

Still haven't figured out how to fix .net framework 1.0 because it can't be uninstalled and it won't let me reinstall it "on top" of the old one. But so far I haven't noticed any problems because of that, so I'm leaving it alone.

If you're sure the system is free of malware, check into your firewall and antiviral software settings to see if they're blocking something important.

If you're using a router, you may have to power it off, wait a few and then restart it.

If you have Internet Explorer 8, there's a help screen on that error message, but not very informative. If you have an earlier version of IE, there was an option under Tools to diagnose the connection which was actually quite good. Don't see it anywhere in IE8, so I suspect Microsoft decided it was too good and removed it. :emotion-12:
