Can't open downloads

Question

Made plane reservations. They send me my Travel Itinerary via a download. Downloaded it, but Windows says it can't open it because it doesn't know what program created it. Directed me to go to web to automatically find out which program and message said it doesn't know either. How do I get my download to open?

Boy, now my ignorance is really going to show! In my old windows, I used to be able to go into Windows Explorer (I think) and it showed all my files along with the path. I can't find this in WindowsXP. How would I find this?

Generally, the download should be in html or text format. Two things to try. Find the download on your hard drive. Append the extension of the file so that it reads .htm at the end of it. Try to double click on it. If it doesn't open in Internet Explorer, change the extension from .htm to .txt. Double click on the file. It should open with notepad or wordpad. If it still doesn't open, change the extension to .doc. Double-click again. Word or Wordpad will open it.
The key to solving this is finding the file on your hard drive and changing the extensions. If this doesn't work, as Volcano says, post the extension here and we'll try to assist. Good luck.

The file doesn't have an extension that makes it recognizable. Take a guess that it is a plain text file, and try opening it in notepad. If you can read it, great. If not, maybe it is a file proprietary to your e-mail program or your ISP. What e-mail program do you use and who is your ISP?

I was able to open it with the extensions given, but I'm sure it's not in the format that the airlines sent it to me. Hope I'm not going to have a problem at the airport.

Go to Start|Programs|Accessories (it's not a main listing in Programs in XP). If you use it as frequently as I do, right-click it and choose "Send to|Desktop (create shortcut)" so it will be more readily accessible.

You can open Windows Explorer by hitting the Windows Flag on your key board and the E key at the same time.

it most definately will open with IE. i've downloaded things from the net that looked like the name you've giving .
for instance, i've downloaded .jpg from CNN, about 9/11. the file detail will show it as a .jpg. but my program that i open pictures with, will not reconize it as a .jpg. i think it probablly has something to do with the 2 periods in the file name(not including the period in the extention). the icon will be an 'open with' file, but the view windows in the left of my folder will show the picture and i can open with IE.

they don't want anybody stealing their web property.

(prob. security related, being it was your personal info on a reservation)
