Can you boot from a USB floppy drive ? How can I ?
Can one with a Dimension 8250, boot from a USB floppy drive? (There is no internal floppy drive on my 8250.)
I can't seem to find the Bios settings to allow it.Boot sequence is Hard Drive or CD-ROM. And the search from the Forum really does not give me a good example for USB floppy drive booting..
I ran the flopy version Bios file BR59795 A04 from the hard drive, inserted a blank formatted disk(took right out of the box) , and created a DOS bootable disk.
when I booted from this disk, nothing happened, the OS started normally. I donot think that the Dimension 8250 can boot from USB floppy drive.
ps. I ordered an internal floppy disk drive for 8250 yesterday.
pss. I even copied the floppy DOS bootable disk to CD and then tried to boot from that ! ( I put CD-ROM first in the Bios Boot sequence)

Since I don't have an 8250 and since the documentation on Dell's web site lacks details, it is hard for me to know if the 8250 can boot from the USB device. On other models, one would first go into the BIOS and under Integrated Devices (Legacy Options) see if there is a setting to enable Legacy USB support and if there is a boot option as one of the choices. At the minimum, one would have to enable Legacy USB support and if possible enable the boot option. Once that is done, check to see if the USB floppy shows up in the boot sequence menu, then set it as the first boot device.
It is possible to boot to DOS from a CD, but you need to create a special CD that boots to pure DOS. Once you can do that, you can copy the file created by the floppy version of the BIOS upgrade program to the DOS bootable CD, then manually run the BIOS flash by typing in either the name of the batch file that runs the BIOS flash or by typing in the name of the program that runs the flash.
You can create a DOS bootable CD-ROM from CD writing programs like Nero. Otherwise, the complicated instructions for creating a DOS bootable CD can be found at:

If you have ordered a floppy drive, my advice is to wait for the floppy drive to arrive, install it, then boot from that to flash the BIOS.

From the TDK website FAQ page : "Since the USB external floppy drive will not be recognized by your computer until after it has loaded its operating system, it will NOT be able to be used as a bootable drive."
