Choppy sound and mouse movement - related to java??

I have been having problems with intermittent choppy movement of the mouse as well as choppiness in audio and video playback.

I recently noted that the problem goes away when I open the Java control panel, or open the java console within windows.

For instance, as I type this right now, my mouse jumps intermittently as it goes across the screen.
If I go into internet explorer, hit tools, sun java console, now I have the little java icon in the system tray.  The problem is now resolved.  However, eventually the java icon disappears, and the problem comes back, until I load the java console again.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on??

Download eWidO , and Spybot , and Microsoft Antispyware -- use the preferences in each of those programs to scan your computer as deeply as possible.

I've done lots of scouring for spyware, and it has not made any difference.

I went ahead and tried the microsoft one with nothing new found, I'll go ahead and try spybot and see if something slipped by that, ewido, and ad-aware - but I don't think it's a spyware issue.

Wow, this sounds remarkably akin to a problem I just posted about. The Java console has never opened on my taskbar, so I might try that to see if that fixes the problem... but, has this been resolved? If so, may I ask what you did to rectify the problem?

Thank you,
Donna

Donna,

Follow the link in my previous post and try the fix I recommended there.

BTW: It's always a good idea to include the model number of your PC and the version of Windows installed whenever you post to the forums. Makes it that much easier for someone to point you in the right direction.

Ron

Edit: if you have a Dimension 3000, make sure you have BIOS version A02. You can see the BIOS version number near the bottom of the screen during the POST before XP starts to load. If you need it, go to this link to download and install BIOS A02. A post in another thread indicates that this version helps fix the problem with the IDE channel that causes it to run in slow PIO mode rather than in Ultra DMA mode.

I did as you suggested and the problem seems to have disappeared! (One of my channels did say PIO.)

Thank you so much!

Let me look in my crystal ball...you have a Samsung hard drive in your PC. If I'm correct, start making noises at Dell, assuming you're still under warranty, that you want a new HD and it must not be another Samsung. You'll accept Seagate or Western Digital (but not Maxtor). Try to get them to send you a new drive with everything installed so you don't have to hassle with installing XP and all the drivers and software. (But you will have to install all the XP updates/hotfixes)

And in the meanwhile be sure to post your system full specs, including your version of BIOS and Windows, and then run pushdma.exe again for another temporary fix.

I have a Dimension 8400, and A04 bios.   Why would opening the java console and having it active in the system tray solve the problem?

Download free Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com. Launch PE and on its toolbar click options>always on top. Now play some audio without java console running. When music gets choppy, look at CPU column in PE window to see what's using CPU time, aside from System Idle Process. If DPCs (Deferred Procedure Calls) are using high % of CPU time and you have nvidia video card, there's the issue.

In that case, you may just need a new video driver from nvidia.com. I suggest v77.77.
Do not use 81.98 which is their latest and so buggy on my 8400, I had to remove it. You may have to search nvidia.com for 77.77 because their driver wizard will only take you to 81.98.

I used process explorer, and there were a high number of DPC's, which went back down when I opened the java console.

I upgraded the nvidia drivers to the latest, and nothing has changed, except now loading java doesn't get rid of the dpc's?  Is this part of the bugginess you encountered with the latest drivers? Do you think things would work with 77.77 as you suggested?

On my 8400, nvidia driver v81.98 made the system freeze or Blue Screen. I never got around to playing music or anything else before I took it off. Don't know if v77.77 will fix your problem, but worth a try.

And if DPCs are still high with v77.77 and the audio skips, and also assuming your PC is under warranty, contact Dell right away for a replacement nvidia 6800 card.

Make sure you follow instructions at nvidia.com for removing an old driver and installing a new one. You probably also want to go to www.omegadrivers.net and get his latest version of free Driver Cleaner. After you remove the old driver, run DC using the "nvidia filter". Add/Remove Programs control panel typically leaves 3-4 nvidia driver files and a folder that you want to get rid of before installing any new driver.

Good luck!

Forceware 81.85 is WHQL certified. I would go with those drivers.

Glad Dell agreed to swap the 6800 card out. Don't know if this is a problem with any of the newer nvidia cards Dell offers. If it means anything, I haven't seen (any?) posts about this same audio problem in systems with the geforce 7800.

You might want to post this question on either the Dimension -video or Dimension -upgrade hardware forum to get feedback about the merits of the cards available as replacements.

Good luck. Hope this is the last of your problems!
