Computer won't start up, it just makes noises!! (Dimension 2300)

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2300 series and it will not start up.  When I turn the computer on it makes two noises.  First a high pitched short beep and then a slightly longer low pitched beep.  It sounds very similar to a dial-up modem attempting to make a connection, but I do not believe it has anything to do with a modem.  Anyways, upon starting the computer, I hear these noises and then nothing happens on the monitor.  I know the power works because the green indicator lights on the computer turn on and it makes the beeping noises, and the monitor also turns on.  When this first started it would occasionally start up after numerous attempts, but now it won't work at all.  Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

actually, amazingly enough, i am having almost the exact same problem, only with a 4500. the main difference, besides the specs, is that my computer does not beep at all; however, it turns on (green light is on, cd tray working), but nothing happens. monitor is blank and goes into sleep mode and computer is idle. what is the problem???

Is there anybody with any advice on this?  I am really frustrated with it.

Have you called tech. support yet? They may be able to pin down the problem for you. Most likely, the problem is a bad motherboard or a bad hard disk. You'l usually hear beeping sounds if your hard drive or motherboard is bad. Also, check the green lights on the back of your tower. If they're not all green, you have a problem.

I checked for the lights, but I can't seem to find them.  I only see an orange light next to my broadband connection and a place for another light which says "act/ (green)" that is not on. Thanks for the help though. I think it has finally come down to calling for tech help. I will post what was wrong if I figure it out.

Sliknik27:

Heres the page that lists the error codes for your system:

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>

The orange light you seeing is the activity light on your network card.

As the above page states two beeps mean that somthing is wrong with the memory. So your proably going to have to open up the case and reseat it.   If that doesnt work or it goes back to needing several times to restart youll proably want to look at replacing the memory and/or the motherboard.
