Del optiplex 760 running slow

Hello,

I'm having problems with computer running slow, Tried re-installing windows 7 and  Dell diagnostics but it never shows results..Have tried downloading update drivers to change the bios but still no change..much hair pulling out not sure what to do next any ideas would be appreciated cheers :emotion-7:

How did you reinstall, did you clean install?

In the task manager what is the CPU and memory usage and what tasks are running in the background?

What processor is installed? Are all the cores of the processor showing up in task manager?

Hello Philip, yes I did a clean install about 4 times in the last month..

CPU Intell core duo E8400@3.00GHz

Been running the processes in task manager for the last 2 hours the results keep changing so cant get a fixed reading the physical memory is at 44% cpu highest figure 99

I'm not sure there's 60 in process

If the CPUs sat 99% then your system will be sluggish, what processes are running when its at 99%? Do you experience any other issues, error messages or is the system just slow.

Hello Philip, the only process running is Firefox and the only error messages are "can't load page try again" I'm sure it's something to do with chip-set drivers that seem to download but when I look in installed program it says the driver for 'Intel(R)management interface engine' there is no size or version info I have downloaded several times..It was running super fast when I first bought it but then it just slowed down-it came with 2GB memory I have 2 x 1GB memory sticks to put in, not sure if that would make a difference I have hardly anything on it.

And are all of the memory modules of the same speed? (Mhz)

It's on bios version date 29/04/2009 A03  wont let me update to higher version.

I assume you mean your add/remove programs looks like this. This is from my OptiPlex 760 and it is performing normally so it won't be because of that:

The RAM might help as 2 GB is quite poor but the system should work quite well with 2 GB. 4 GB will help. One might suspect the hard drive as mentioned by Delta-Hardware mentioned. The F12 preboot diagnostics have you run the full and extended diagnostics:

The Seagate tools as mentioned should also be used.

I have this same motherboard. High CPU is probably due to the system idle. I'd start with that. You definitely need more RAM. Mine was running great with 2G when there was little on the hard drive. As time went on and I got more programs it got super slow and I had some chrome crashes, game crashes etc. There's 4 Ram slots on the board and it supports up to 8G. I would get as close to that as you can. DDR2 RAM sticks work with this and since they are out of date they're cheap. The processor may not be the problem in my opinion.
