Dell Dimension 4600 CPU

I was handed a hand me down and was wondering if anyone knows how high of a cpu this mobo can hold.  Right now it has an Intel Pentium 4- 2.6 GHz single core. I think. Can it handle a multiple core and a higher GHz processor?

any help will be appreciated :emotion-1:

thanks Mike.

No, the Dimension 4600 has a Socket 478 and does not support any dual core processors, these require at a minimum, a Socket LGA 775

The 4600 support's Socket 478, P4 533/800 MHz FSB processors.

The early 4600 models will take up to 3.0GHz and the later models, to 3.2GHz or 3.4GHz.

The 4600 is capable of using Prescott processors, if you have PC2700 memory and you install a Prescott, you may want to replace it with PC3200.

Because the Prescott runs hotter, you should think about upgrading the heatsink.
Prior to installing the processor, check that BIOS version A12, that has added support for newer processors, is installed.

More Dimension 4600 processor upgrade info, can be found in the following discussions:

You can swap in a micro-ATX motherboard and use any CPU you wish. The Soundblaster-type front audio connector would have to be rewired to work, but otherwise the wiring is compatible.

This is a nice one with the front panel headers in the right places: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
