Dell Optiplex 390 Power Supply dying

We got a shipment of 20 Optiplex 390 with i5 CPU in August. So far we have hade three power supplies go dead on us.  Anyone else seeing issues with the Optiplex 390?

The field techs replace the power supply and we are back in business, no power indicator light on the back.

I think i might be haveing a similar issue,

this is the first PC to go on this site out of about 20 but when you try and power up the PC the power LED goes amber the blue then off, this all happens in the space of about three seconds.

My initial post was a few months ago when we first started seeing the Optiplex 390 SFF having problems starting up when you pushed the power button.  It was inconsistent on how many times you had to push the power.  The blue front light would flash on and then the machine would shut off and eventually - it might start.  We ordered 45 machines in Jan 2012 and 11 had power up problems.  We replaced the motherboards.  We are a school and I think the new motherboards were under the Dell warranty - not sure though.  The 11 problem machines are working fine as of May 2012.

We have a customer with 15 of these, in 1 yr 11 have failed and 1 has failed twice. Dell still says no known issues. Yeah.

We have a mix of 780's and 790's.  We had 2 790's fail in the last 24 hours:

I'm sorry but you are fortunate. I purchased 30 of these units and have had 7 of them die on me, all with faulty PSU's. So please don't tell me that is also down to our electrical system overloading them.

Dell has extended our warranty on the PSU's for 1 year because of this problem.

We have gotten roughly 150 of these over the past 18 months and have seen close to 30 power supply failures -it's ridiculous.

WE HAVE A TOWER AND THERE IS NO LIFE WHEN POWER BUTTON IS PRESSED, AMBER LIGHT ON SYSTEM BOARD AND PRESSING THE PSU TEST BUTTON RESULTS IN FANS RUNNING AND GREEN LIGHT NEXT TO TEST BUTTON TO BE LIT. UNDER WARR SO DELL IS SENDING I/O PANEL, MB AND PWR BUTTON - JUST WANTED TO ASK IF IT SOUND LIKE A BAD PSU? ALSO THE LAST DIGITS ON PSU ARE A00 LIKE PREVIOUS USER HAD WRITTEN MAY BE SUSPECT - DATE R1118 S/N :00092171

Joe, This sounds more like motherboard failure from which I have had several from these pesky Optiplex 390's.

The power supply failure is pretty much always results in the unit being completely dead with no lights and I have had lots of these fail.

The simplest way to confirm this is to swap the PSU out of a working machine.

good luck
